Romeo and Juliet Have you ever known of a thought-to-be perfect relationship to end in a terrific horror? The forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet was thought to be a perfect teen romance, but turned out tragic in the end. Shakespeare writes a play on two teens who fall in love, but both die because of the love they have for eachother. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, He depicts Romeo, a young teen, as childish, passionate, and selfish to show the trouble of a young boy in love. Romeo is very childish at the beginning of the play and shows that in many places throughout the story. Romeo is lovesick and states,“My sadness sits heavy in my chest…Here’s what love is; a smoke made out of lover’s sighs”(1.1.180-185). Romeo is being self-absorbed by only caring about the girl in his life and how depressed he is instead of his friends that are trying to help him. Romeo becomes very upset about being kicked out of Verona and states, “Calling death banishment is like cutting off my head with a golden ax and smiling while I'm being murdered!”(3.3.22). Romeo is throwing a fit about being exiled instead of being grateful that he gets to stay alive. He compares exile to murder just because he isn’t getting exactly what he wants and is being very dramatic. Romeo finds Juliet and believes she’s actually dead, and he decides he wants to die as he says, “I have made with death forever. come bitter poison, come unsavory guide!”(5.3.115). Romeo says he’s ready for forever death and he’s ready and committed to suicide. This is a very selfish act because he’s taking himself away from his family that has known and loved him, for a girl he’s barely known for a week. In conclusion, Romeo is ungrateful and evidently becomes selfish when he faces adversity and
