Romeo And Juliet Techniques

The movie Romeo and Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann was originally written as a play by William Shakespeare in 1597. A major turning point in the film is when romeo 's friend mercutio is stabbed by Juliet 's cousin Tybalt.

Leading up to this scene is the scene where tybalt notices that romeo (whose family the Capulets have been fighting with Tybalt 's family the Benvolio 's.) has crashed his party. Tybalt is enraged by this and so the next day he goes down to the beach to pick a fight with romeo.

The scene begins with mercutio and a group of friends talking on the beach, the benvolio 's then pull up in their car and begin to slowly walk towards mercutio and his friends. From a bird 's eye view you notice people scrambling out of the way to avoid the inevitable clash between the two groups. Mercutio then begins to tease tybalt, throughout this brief period of time the director uses camera techniques such as close ups to show the emotion on the faces of the two it also uses techniques like low shots to make mercutio appear powerful.

When romeo arrives tybalt challenges him to a shoot out which romeo refuses, this enrages tybalt and causes him to beat romeo to increase the intensity of the fight the camera becomes shaky as if the camera

“A plague o’ both your houses!” mercutio 's face has grown serious and pained as he yells at tybalt and romeo. His voice echos, thunder claps sound and the camera switches to a long shot showing the clouds swirl around the group of enemies this sets a grave scene making the viewer feel a sense of inevitable doom. Mercutio then hobbles down to the beach with romeo in tow still gasping “A plague o’ both your houses!” and dies in romeo 's arms.

this scene triggers a chain of events such as the death of tybalt which leads to romeo being banished and so on until the end of the film.
