Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet is an old, well- crafted play in literacy. It is a tale of two lost lovers who couldn’t be together. Although there are many reasons that the happy couple couldn’t be together, one of the worst were the people around them. Tybalt was an interesting secondary character he played a very strong role in both Romeo and Juliet’s lives. His hot temper, and great swordsmanship turned him into a malignant character, who went the great lengths to protect what he thought was his.

Tybalt Capulet is a part of the Capulet family. He is the nephew of Capulet and Lady Capulet, he is also the cousin of Juliet. By many he is called ‘the prince of cats’. The term ‘Prince of Cats” stems from an even older tale called “Reynard Fox.” In Reynard Fox one of the main characters is named Tibert a very quarrelsome character that soon evolved into the name Tybalt used in Romeo and Juliet. He was described as a lithe, agile, predatory, and territorial. Tybalt hated being teased about his character especially being called “The Prince of Cats” by Mercutio. In this story it is found that Tybalt was the cause of Romeo being banished. Tybalt’s intense anger issues caused him to hold an unnecessary grudge towards Romeo. Although Romeo did nothing wrong Tybalt felt that he shouldn’t have attended a Capulet party. If Romeo had not have attended the party Tybalt would not have killed Mercutio. The terrible chain reaction he caused would have never happened. Thereafter Benvolio tells the Prince “There lies the man, slain by young Romeo that slew the kinsman, brave Mercutio” (Shakespeare 1050). The hatred that Romeo had for Tybalt led to his banishment, after killing the man that killed Mercutio. If Tybalt wasn’t such a hasty, easily tempered man this series of events may have never
