Option 1 The modern version, released in 1997, compared to the original version, was more effective. The use of guns in the place of swords gives the audience something they can relate to because swords are no longer used in the 21st century. The 1997 version of Romeo and Juliet effectively portrayed the original play written by Shakespeare due to correctly depicting the characters personalities, actions, and by including most of the major events of the play. The personalities of Tybalt, Romeo, and the families of the two remained the same. Tybalt is arrogant, self conceited, and an instigator. He started the fight between himself and Romeo, but then talked Mercutio into the fight. Romeo is still quick to his actions. This means that he does not think about consequences before he carries out the action. The two families remained true to themselves. In the original version, Mercutio and Tybalt fight in the town square, but in the modern version, Mercutio and Tybalt fight at the beach. The original version includes Romeo fighting Tybalt, which also occurs in the modern version. The only difference is that Tybalt dies because Romeo shoots him several times. Juliet drink the potion given to her by the Friar in both the modern version and original version which leads to everyone believing that she is dead.
