Juliet, as you face the difficult and nerve-wracking decision of whether or not to take the Friar’s potion, there are a few points you should take into consideration. It seems as though it would be best for you not to take the vial because there is a chance you will find another way to be with Romeo, it will greatly affect your family in a negative way, and your plan will not go as expected.
It may seem like you do not have an option besides taking the vial, but there has to be another way. There are several different ways in which you can end up with Romeo. When talking about you, he did not once mention your plan which leads me to believe that he is unaware of what will happen. This is a major issue as he is supposed to be there when you wake up. If he does not know of the plan, he will not be able to be there. This was a concern you expressed yourself when you asked, “How if, when I am laid into the tomb, / I wake before the time that Romeo / Come to redeem me? There’s a fearful point” (4.3.31-33). Romeo not being present completely alters the plan. Another thing to consider is that if Romeo does not know that you will be taking the potion, he will believe, along with everyone else, that you are truly dead. How will he react? Both you and Romeo have stated that you would die for each other. If Romeo hears of your death, he may decide to kill himself so that he would not have to live without you. Then, if the potion does work, you will wake up only to find that your true love is dead. Then, what will happen? Will you decide that you no longer wish to live either? Overall, you need to think about other options, think about others instead of yourself, and realize that the plan will not work. I understand that you feel that you need to be with Romeo and do not want to live without him; however, this plan is rash and not completely thought through. If you and Romeo’s love is true, you will be able to find another way to stay together.
