A foil is a character who is opposite of another character in order to highlight certain characteristics in both characters. An example of foils in a play that Shakespeare wrote, Romeo and Juliet, including rambunctious Tybalt and the tranquil Benvolio. Another example is the obnoxious funny Mercutio and the lovey dovey Romeo. Romeo and Juliet was a Shakespearean play written 1595 by William Shakespeare.
Romeo is impulsive as shown in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare page 429 “Alive in triumph, and Mercutio slain?” Romeo is basically saying that Tybalt must die because he killed his best friend. Arguably William Shakespeare’s most famous play, Romeo and Juliet follows two star-crossed lovers who struggle to hide their love from their feuding families. Much like how Shakespeare explores both the differences and the relationship between the Capulets and the Montagues, the play highlights the correspondence of opposing themes through three characters named Mercutio, Benvolio, and Tybalt, Romeo’s two friends and sworn enemy. Shakespeare includes Romeo’s counterparts to distinguish his unique personality and to emphasize relationships between major contrasting subjects in the play: comedy and tragedy, peace and conflict, and love and anger. Mercutio acts as both Romeo’s foil and the donor of much light-hearted humor within the play, which contrasts the tragic events that inevitably occur.
Romeo’s comparisons create similar themes as Juliet. In act two, scene two, Romeo and Juliet acknowledge their love for each other and the desire to be married. Once they have discussed their family’s hatred Romeo says that “my life were better ended by your love/than death prorogued lacking your love” (2.2.82-83.) This shows that Romeo would rather die loved by Juliet than die unloved. This carries out a similar theme as stated before, they would rather die than be apart.
On the other hand, Mercutio is an humorous, lighthearted joker that mocks love. Romeo is a very moody, melancholy character that people do not expect him to be. When Romeo is first introduced in the play, he is depressed, cries, stays in his room, and even wanders in the dark after his relationship with Rosaline
For example, Mercutio encourages Romeo to attend the Capulet party where he will meet Juliet. In a mocking manner, Mercutio says, “Tut, dun's the mouse, the constable's own word:If thou art dun, we'll draw thee from the mire of this sir-reverence love, wherein thou stick'stup to the ears. Come, we burn daylight, ho”(1.4,40). Provoked, Romeo decides to prove himself “unstuck in love.” This is the first turning point in the play, transforming it into a story of newfound love.
The First Character is Romeo; Romeo is a young man who falls in love with Juliet. The one tragic flaw in Romeo’s character is his impulsiveness. His impulsiveness is why he is swift to fall in love with Juliet. Romeo needed someone to stop him from thinking about the woman he was in love with before.
