For starters, Rosa seated herself in the front of the public bus where only white people were allowed to sit. Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist born in Tuskegee, Alabama on February 4, 1913. Leona and James McCauley, her parents, were both African Americans who worked as teachers and carpenters, respectively. Rosa Parks was raised in a segregated world where racial discrimination was commonplace. Regardless, her mother instilled in her a strong sense of self-worth and taught her to advocate for herself and others.
Rosa Parks stood up for what she believed, or rather, sat down for what she believed. On the evening of December 1, 1955, Parks, an African American, chose to take a seat on the bus on her ride home from work. Because she sat down and refused to give up her seat to a white passenger, she was arrested for disobeying an Alabama law requiring black people to relinquish seats to white people when the bus was full. (Blacks also had to sit at the back of the bus.) Her arrest sparked a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system.

Weeks after her arrest Parks was jailed a second time for her role in the boycott.
