In the story “The Joy Luck Club”, by Amy Tan many characters face many struggle throughout the story. Though there is one character that stands out, her name is Rose Hsu Jordan. Rose stands out due to her not having the best life and having tragic events occur throughout her life, including currently getting a divorce from her husband whom she’s been with seventeen years, watching her little brother drown to death, and having a very uptight mother.
Rose is currently undergoing a divorce which is huge milestone in her life. The story depicts Rose as if she had let her mother down due to her husband ending the marriage. Her husband is leaving her due to him feeling as she could never make up her mind on any decisions. This happened after he had made a medical mistake and accidently left a patient without a nerve on her face causing her left side of her smile to fall. Her husband Ted was so insecure about making decisions after the tragic event he left the decision making up to Rose. She failed to do this because before he made all the decisions, she depended on someone for making decisions and with both of them unable to make decisions her husband ultimately left her.

This occurred when her then boyfriend Ted first introduced her to his family. His family had told Rose to not think about any marriage soon since Ted needs to focus on his medical career and then included that she had nothing against minorities that she had met some wonderful people in her profession but in Ted’s profession he will be “judged by a different standard, by patients and other doctors who might not be as understanding as the Jordans were.” She then goes on saying that it was “unfortunate” for the world seeing it this way because of the vietnam war. Ted’s mother had told her all this even though Rose was not Vietnamese which angered her since she was profiling
