Roosevelt left after the election was over, went to Africa and came back with much energy, known for being adventurous and as a “cowboy”, and inspired many laws. Roosevelt said he was willing to accept the Republican nominations, thinking about doing a third term, then later became a candidate on the Progressive party ticket replacing La Follette. The Progressive party had no future after few candidates were elected in state and local offices, but still was a great third party that helped spur pet reforms by Democrats. Republicans became a minority in Congress, and were out of the white house for 8 years. Wilson: The Idealist in Politics Wilson came from the South, with traditions in Jeffersonian democracy, and was eloquent in speeches. He believed in the high role of the chief executive, but he was arrogant and lacked a common touch. His idealism made him difficult to compromise and stubborn, and he was convinced in his own right. Wilson did not send his presidential message over to Capitol, but appeared in person presenting his appeal, which was unprecedented. The tariff reduced import fees and was a landmark in tax legislation, and due to the 16th amendment, there was a graduated income tax, so the revenue from taxes made up for the lost tariff
