An orphan named Tree-ear from A Single Shard was raised by an injured elder named Crane-man. He lives a life of love and care. Despite him having barely anything, he enjoys the things life has to offer. Contrary to him, an orphan named Ruckel from “Orphans’ Lonely Beginnings” lives a life of darkness, isolation, and pain. He was never taught right from wrong and was punished for no reason. Even with all of the ways their lives vary, they are still parallel to each other. After Tree-ear’s parents died of fever, he was taken in by monks. In comparison, Ruckel also lost his parents to a sickness. Crane-man adopted Tree-ear and devoted his life to loving and caring for Tree-ear. Tree-ear was an only child; Therefore, Crane-man’s focus was always on him. When he was an infant, he was diagnosed with Polio. Because of his sickness, his parents abandoned him. He was taken in by an orphanage for “irrecoverable” children, where he felt lonely and sad. It was not a friendly environment. In comparison to Tree-ear, they both did not have the best home. At Ruckel’s orphanage, nobody cared for him except for his surrogate mother. In addition to Tree-ear, he had one person in his life who cared for him and loved him. She was the only one whom he believed love and cared about him. Years later, she was electrocuted trying to heat bath water. He was devastated after the horrid event. He had nobody to care for him, love him, or understand him. The people at the orphanage beat and abused him when they should’ve been caring for him. Unlike Tree-ear, he had multiple people at the orphanage he stayed at; Therefore, barely any focus was on him.
