Guatemala has one of the worst poverty rates in Latin America, 6.4 million people live in poverty. United Nations have defined poverty as living off of a low income or lacking a necessity. For example, people living in poverty could lack clothing, safe shelter, healthy diet, public services, education, safe drinking water, or say in the government. All of these examples are present in everyone’s lives who live in poverty, but on an extreme level in developing countries especially. United Nations have also split poverty into two sections: Rural Poverty and Urban Poverty.
Rural Poverty
Rural poverty is defined as spending most of your time working on a farm or land, and living on a farming estate. In order to live in Rural poverty, all of the definition must be in someone's life to be living in rural poverty. Guatemala classified as a country living in Rural poverty. Urban Poverty

First, there is a contrast in public services. The location of towns factors into public services. In rural areas, towns are much more spread out than urban cities. If there are not many towns close together, public services must come from the town rather than the county. This is an issue because if a rural town in poverty, it is likely that they cannot afford those services. Second, there is a distinction in education, especially in adults. In Rural poverty, education in parents is significantly lower than Urban poverty. 18% of parents of Rural poverty are educated while 25% of parents have an education who live in Urban poverty Lastly, there is a difference in employment rates. Children living in poverty in Rural areas have a higher employment rate after high school than Urban areas. Although, studies show that Urban children will end up making more money in the future than Rural
