The internet is arguably the deadliest addiction known to man; it is slowly destroying human ability to interact. Societies media creatures have been stripped of their abilities to passionately converse face to face. This growing problem is a threat to future generations. The world as we see it, in the midst of the millennial generation, has changed. Rushkoff, in “Generation Like” talks about how social media controls us. Generation Like brings this idea that social media is a giant marketing scheme. Social media controls its consumers by attracting them with their wants. Rushkoff basically says if society knew that they were being controlled directly they wouldn’t like it. Social media hides behind this wall where consumers are victims blindly being controlled like a drug where they have no knowledge of what’s truly going on. Social media is a scary, addictive drug with no cure. This drug has caused the current generation to be brainwashed to hide behind their computer screens, question the future safety of lives, and created this theoretical addiction called “internet high”.

What started out as humans controlling the machines turned tables when society allowed social media to embed itself into our everyday lives. Social media controls us. The greatest attribute of the internet is also the greatest flaw. The fact that social media is “Always on” puts the idea of privacy at risk. The fact that anybody at anytime can access your information wherever you are can be scary. Just because you don’t use your phone doesn’t mean its not in use. Currently with the technological advances, your phone can be used at a tracking device even if you aren’t using it. Anyone with the right tools, which isn’t hard to acquire, could know your where about and person information as they desire. This is alarming to many because many believe that the internet is safe because they can control what we post and when they go on. In “Generation Like” Rushkoff interviews this family where the mother and daughter are a dualistic team advertising themselves to make money on YouTube and Instagram. The mother says “I hate to say it, but if I have a full body picture, she will get tons of likes and that’s just the reality” (Rushkoff 51:07). Although the mother believes this idea is safe because she controls what she is putting on to attract “followers”.
