This angered the Russian citizens which led to the Russian Revolution of 1905. On January 22, 1905, approximately 150 workers were killed by soldiers who fired on peaceful protestors, led by priest, Father Gapon, in Saint Petersburg. This event was known as Bloody Sunday and signified the beginning of the Revolution of 1905. Subsequently, several radical groups formed an alliance and organized several mutinies and strikes against the Russian autocracy. Left with no choice, Nicholas II issued a manifesto on October 30, 1905 that granted more suffrage rights, got rid of arbitrary arrest without a trial, and provided for an elected legislature.
In 1917, Tsar Nicholas ll is the current ruler of Russia. Russia’s economic growth is increased by the Czar’s reforms of the production of factories. During this era, Russia desperately needed to keep up with the rest of Europe’s industry. This reform worked perfectly, but the working conditions of these factories didn’t charm factory workers. After the events of the Russo-Japanese War, “Bloody Sunday”, and WW1, Russia was in utter chaos under the Czar’s ghastly leadership.
During the 20th century, Russia was experiencing turmoil in war and the country was deeply affected with Tsar Nicholas’s wrong decisions and lack of experience in politics. After the 1917 revolution in Russia, Lenin became the ruler of Russia and the USSR and proved to be the best Russian ruler of the 20th century. Before then, Tsarism dominated and Nicholas II was in power until he foresaw many revolutions against his methods of ruling. He remained as the supreme ruler and did not take actions for reforms. However, after the 1917 revolution, which Lenin masterminded, the Tsar was overthrown and the Bolsheviks established a stable government which took control in Russia.
“The czar refused to listen to demands for political change and in October, a general strike occurred as workers in the railways, industry and the banks stopped working” (document 3) A strike occurred because the czar didn’t listen to political concerns. This shows how unpleasant people were with the government. This can lead to the overthrow of the Russian monarchy. In document 3 it states, “...when a peaceful demonstration of 200,00 men, women and children in front of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg calling for reform was ended by the police and troops guarding the palace” Many people were unhappy with the Russian government and the fact the police were involved suggests how the government was willing to use force to stop political
Czar Nicholas and the Romanov Dynasty: Czar Nicholas was the last czar of the Romanov (Russian) Dynasty to rule Russia. Czar Nicholas and the Romanov Dynasty played a crucial role in provoking the start of the Russian Revolution (“Romanov Dynasty”). During the Russian Revolution, Russia was beginning to fall towards an economic corruption. Czar Nicholas was aware of the severity of lack of human necessities, yet he ignored the citizens. As a result, the citizens rioted the capital of Petrograd, making demands for food and better working conditions.
The BOLSHEVIKS wanted to have a social reform within the country of Russia. The BOLSHEVIKS then made a peace treaty with Germany that was called the peace of Brest-Liovsk on March 3, 1918. The treaty entails that the BOLSHEVIKS not only a punitive peace, but also they game up most of their land of the Baltic provinces. Because of this Russia lost “a third of its population, a third of its agricultural land, four-fifths of its coal mines, and half of its industry” (167). This was a sign that the BOLSHEVIKS would then begin a regime that was more callous than ever before.
In the early nineteen hundreds, Russia was ruled by Czar Nicholas II. He was the last in line of a long line of monarchs called Romanovs. By 1915 , most of the Russian people had lost complete faith in the Czar. Many factors include the corruption of the Russian government, approximately 3 quarters of Russia was poverty stricken, substandard working conditions and wages, and the dreadful involvement in World War I. Russia’s political problems during the Russian Revolution caused a major shift in people’s lives government, and religion. In 1917, there were two revolutions that took place in March and October.
“He was Tsar Nicholas II of Russia: the wealthiest Monarch on the world, who ruled over 130 million people and one-sixth of the earth’s land surface, yet turned a blind eye to the abject poverty of his subjects.” - Candace Fleming. The Romanovs ruled over Russia for 300 years; once Nicholas II came to power, it all collapsed. World War I and different instances in 1917 provoked the Russian Revolution to into play. The Russian Revolution then made Nicholas II abdicate the throne, the Bolsheviks rose to power after that. Then on July 17, 1918 Nicholas II, his family, and servants were executed in the cellar of the prison house.
In the early 1900’s the Russian people had become angry at the way the Russian monarchy (Tsar Nicholas II) had handled foreign affairs and how he was treating his people unfairly. They had many protests, one in 1905 and two in 1917. The revolution in 1905 overthrow the absolute monarchy and put in a provisional government. No one really listened to the provisional government, so they overthrew it again in 1917. These revolutions and acts of disobedience led to many unnecessary deaths of innocent people.
The Russian Revolution of 1917 marked the end of the Romanov dynasty and centuries of Russian Imperial rule. During the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks, led by leftist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin seized power and destroyed the tradition of czarist rule. Civil War broke out in Russia between the Red and White Armies. The Red Army fought for the Lenin’s Bolshevik government. The White Army represented a large group of monarchists, capitalists and supporters of democratic socialism.
Early 20th century Russia was a hotbed for political discontent. The 1900s saw an increase in rebellion, riot, and opposition to the incompetent and unpopular Tsar Nicholas II (McCauley). New political parties, based on the theories of Marxism, began to gain power amongst the lower class workers and peasants (McCauley 17). By 1917, a series of unfavorable policies including Russia’s involvement in WWI led to the eventual crumbling of the Tsarist regime (McCauley). In February of 1917, the Tsar was forced to abdicate his position as head of the state, and a new provisional government, led by members of the former Duma, was set up in his place (McCauley 14).
Czar Nicholas II In 1917 the long trial of the Russian Revolution fell upon the citizens and serfs of Russia. The Russian Revolution was influenced by many people, but the country especially suffered from the choices of two men named Czar Nicholas and Vladimir Lenin. Both leaders had a different impact on the country of Russia, but Czar Nicholas’s poor leadership and stubbornness was the main contributor to the start of the Russian Revolution.
As the strikes increased, tsar Nicholas II had responded to the plead of the working class with the October Manifesto. In the book, “Major Problems in the History of Imperial Russia”, by James Cracraft, contains a document titled, “The October Manifesto of Nicholas II, 1905”. This document was Nicholas II response to the Russian Revolution of 1905, as it addressed the basic civil rights to the people and the creation of an elected parliament which was known as the State Duma. In the beginning of the document, Nicholas states that the riots are causing the nation despair and to obliged with theses riots and disturbances, he will unite the government. “We believe it necessary to unify the operations of the higher government.
The Russian Revolution, which was started by Lenin and his followers, was a rebellion that occurred in 1917 which forced higher powers to act to the needs of the lower class. For instance, many citizens were worried for their protection in consequence to the lack of survival necessities due to an early drought. Furthermore, their current czar during the time was incapable for his position as a czar and made horrendous decisions as czar. For example, when the czar, Nicholas, entered in World War I, he sent untrained troops into countless battles of failure which costed in mass amounts of lost life (paragraph 23).
The Russian Revolution is a governmental overthrow of a ruling that took place in the early twentieth century. Prior to the revolution, Russia was ruled by Czar Nicholas II who was a part of the last reigning Russian monarch, the Tsar. The Tsar had complete power in Russia as he owned much of the land, commanded the army, and controlled the church. During the reign of the Tsar, the Russian citizens were treated badly and unfair. They experienced vigorous labor in dangerous conditions for little pay and were without food and money countless times.
