Sustainability Report: Rwanda
General Information This report is on the suitability of Rwanda for investment in our company. This task will hopefully give us some insight on Rwanda’s political stability, social and cultural environment if we are to invest in this country. Hopefully we will be able to have a profitable humanitarian effort in this country. The approximate population in Rwanda is 12 million people ("Geography", n.d.). These people are packed into a dense 26,338 sq. kilometers of land area. Out of the 12 million citizens of Rwanda, the ethnic groups are made up of 84% Hutu, 15% Tutsi, and 1% Twa ("Geography", n.d.). This is the highest it has been in this area dating back to the 1960s. It has risen 7.66 dollars since last year and was at 365.05 in 2012 which seems like it is steadily rising. The HDI (Human development index) rates Rwanda listed at 151 with a 0.506 in 2013 ("Human Development Reports", n.d.). This has risen over the last 30 years but is still barely above the Low human development level at 0.493. Although it has only raised 0.004 points between 2012-2013, it raised .39 between 2011-2012 and continues to rise. The Freedom Houses scores from 2014 show that although the score for civil liberties improved from 6 to 5, the status is still not free ("Freedom House", n.d.). The ratings go 1=best to 7=worst, so 5 is still not a very good score. They also received a 6 for political rights so the overall Freedom rating came out to 5.5 ("Freedom House", n.d.). Rwanda’s economy has been growing over the recent years which has helped reduced some of the poverty that plagues the country. This genocide was caused by the so called “elite” individuals trying to instill fear to keep power. This involved Hutu neighbors going from their houses and massacring their Tutsi counterparts. When this graphic and morbid event ended many were dead without much explanation and even some of the individuals involved did not know why, they just knew if they did not do this act they would suffer the same fate. This definitely set-back Rwanda many years and people are still suffering the losses
