Throughout life, one’s choices and actions are greatly affected by their worldview and what is perceived to lead to success in that society. No event, post 1945, exemplified this further than the Rwandan Genocide. Basically, the Rwandan Genocide saw the Hutu majority carry out terrible crimes against humanity toward the Tutsi minority, resulting in about 15 percent of the Rwandan population perishing. The Hutus went through with such heinous, violent acts against the Tutsi because of the hate that was rooted when German and Belgian colonists divided the two ethnic groups and gave the Tutsi power over the native Hutu. Along with this, the Hutu felt the Tutsi had wronged them for centuries before, and the Hutu now controlled the government, creating perfect storm for the events that ensued. The hate between the Hutu and Tutsi was planted far before the genocide took place, allowing for the wounds given to the Hutu, by the Tutsi and the colonists, to fester. In the late 1800s German colonists, who had very weak control over the Rwandan region, approved and encouraged the oppression of the Hutus, due to their view of Tutsi superiority, solidifying the Tutsi rule that had come 600 years prior.
