They would not pay it.” this
Millions of single mothers live near or below the poverty line in the United States. They must struggle to simply pay the bills and put food on the table. Even with government subsidies, food stamps, and child support Katrina is fighting to survive with her children. The unfortunate part of the whole situation is that Katrina did nothing wrong she worked hard and simply tried to raise a family but life took a couple of turns. Katrina married young and started having children equally young as well.
Without food stamps today a lot of people would go hungry. Reply Reply to Comment Michael Johnson Michael
The term “welfare” generally has a negative connotation when being discussed because it represents lack of resources. Many people think that it’s recipients may be “milking the system” or “lazy” and don’t want to go out and earn their living however, welfare can and should be used as a positive asset to society. However, it tends to be used as a crutch for longer than appropriate but, after conducting in depth research it has become obvious that this is rarely the recipients defect. The government creates these programs that are designed to help those in need and they generally do for some amount of time. But when an individual strives to obtain a higher paying job, it doesn’t even have to be much of a pay increase, they are at risk of losing for example, their rent assistance.
The government spent $76 billion on SNAP benefits in 2014. Are the benefits of SNAP worth the amount spent on it, and does this program effect the economy negatively? Food Stamps are given to people who are below the poverty line. Not all people think that Food Stamps should be available because they think if people are poor, they should get a job rather than rely on the government to give them money. Food Stamps help poor people and should continue to be available because they prevent hunger, help poverty-stricken families, and boost the economy.
That is not what welfare should be used for though, it should be used as an extra last resort support system for an individual until they can get back on their feet. This is why there are so many people on the street and in homeless shelters, because the government is giving them free money. This is why it should in the end be up to private organizations and charity. This is because if it is a small group of people working with the less fortunate they can get to know them individually and try to help them off of welfare or the support that they are getting. Granted there are some things that the less fortunate should have the opportunity to have and that is health care.
According to statistics, fraudulent activity has decreased over the past fifteen years and ninety five percent of the federal funding goes directly to benefit the hungry by food purchases. Recipients use an electric debit card that make alcohol and cigarette purchases impossible. Most fraudulent activity with the card is reported to rest on the retailer alone, not the purchaser. Scott Walker implies that food-share is a negative benefit for the taxpayer in Wisconsin, but economists have found that SNAP purchases generate $1.73 in economic activity across the United States (Pros and Cons
There have been SNAP beneficiaries accused of cheating the system by receiving a greater benefit or exchanging SNAP benefits for cash. The highest payment accuracy that SNAP reached was at 96.19% in 2012 according to the USDA analysis. As we all know it is illegal to trade SNAP benefits for cash, but it still happens and attracts attention to many. Therefore, fraud and abuse in SNAP benefits will always be a political factor that has made Congress improve The Agriculture Act of 2014 SNAP program by reducing fraud which actually has happened because in 2014 fraud rates has been at its lowest. On the other hand, a major economical factor that has influenced the development of The Agriculture Act of 2014 SNAP program would be the implementation of slashing SNAP benefits which will have an affect many vulnerable citizens in the United States.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It allows families on a low income to buy nutritious food with an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card at authorized food stores that allow EBT (Oklahoma Department of Human Services). State Assistance Drug Testing In 2012, $86.5 billion was given to SNAP, including a $3 billion contingency fund set aside for any unforeseen future expenses (Quick Facts 4). Not many people know just how vast the program actually is. As of January 2016, 45.4 million people were participating in SNAP (“SNAP: Frequently Asked Questions” para 2). All states offer food assistance programs like SNAP, but only 13 states require the recipients to undergo drug testing to qualify (Quick Facts 4).
Being a person who is in the low income of things right now, I do receive public assistance in Child Care and I also receive SNAP. Both programs are beneficiary for my needs as I try to better myself by getting an education so that I can have a career that will provide me with the financials I need so that I will no longer need these assistances and I can give someone else the opportunity who does need them to receive them.
“By contrast, unemployed Americans face numerous health challenges beyond loss of income.” (Source 3). Free healthcare would take away numerous health challenges, since they will be given healthcare no matter what. “The unemployed tend to have higher levels of impaired mental health including depression, anxiety, and stress.” (Source 6).
How do you think the average American feels when he pays taxes to the government, just to know that it is going to people who use the money to buy drugs? According to Missouri, Oklahoma, Utah, Mississippi, Kansas, Tennessee, and Arizona only 10% of people receiving welfare are getting caught using drugs, the reason we only catch a small amount is the state government tells the recipients when they are drug testing them. In the technology we have today we can tell if a person is on drugs by three ways one way is urine, another way is blood and the last way is hair. These ways to drug test recipients are all efficient and effective. The most effective way is if you use hair to see if someone is using drugs you can usually tell for about 9 days it also depends on what drug they are using.
Over 35.4 percent of the United States is registered for welfare. An average family of four, that receives money from the government, can expect as least $500 in food stamps, and at least another $1,500 for whatever else, and top it all off, the government pays all bills and also for any medical visits for the family. So
Welfare dependence creates behavioral poverty. Perhaps President Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best: “Continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual and moral disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fibre. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit.” To become comfortable relying on the work of others instead of your own work will change your character, and the character of the nation. Americans want to give everyone a helping hand, but hand-holding year after year, generation after generation, patronizes, corrodes, entraps.
