The 1996 Welfare Reform Act abolished Federal Cash Assistance and Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) programs, all of which many believed locked people in the perpetual cycle of state- assisted poverty. There were three research findings on the “efficacy of the 1996 reform, all gave a summary of the most influential studies conducted by US researchers. Nearly all reached the same conclusions: First, Welfare Reform under the Clinton administration did result in a significant shift into new employment by the long-term welfare recipients. Secondly, the overall strong growth conditions were linked to the U.S. during the late 1900s. Third, the growth in income and employment experienced by the American poor welfare to work transition
Some argue that the government is already doing too much for those in need, causing them to become less and less self reliant but there are so many areas in which the government struggles with setting recipients up for long term success. “ What most people seem not to understand is that even when single mothers work. They must pay either babysitters or daycare providers, and both are expensive” (NY Times, 2016, p. 2). Any reasonable parent would consider this and most likely it would cross their mind that almost all of the money they will be making that day will go straight to paying for a babysitter so it’s a lost cause. “Welfare should be not just about forcing women into the workforce, but also about helping them continue their education so that it might lead to a better job” (NY Times, 2016, p. 2).
Food Stamps boost the economy by “creating markets, and spurring economic growth and jobs in urban and rural communities” (Weill). SNAP benefits can help the economy by getting money into it quickly. In a weak economy, “a $1 increase in SNAP benefits generates about $1.70 in economic activity” (“Policy Basics”). This is a very beneficial thing to have, considering the times we are in. Eventually the people that are in the most trouble will benefit from the program by creating an environment where they can find jobs and earn enough money to support themselves and their family.
That is not what welfare should be used for though, it should be used as an extra last resort support system for an individual until they can get back on their feet. This is why there are so many people on the street and in homeless shelters, because the government is giving them free money. This is why it should in the end be up to private organizations and charity. This is because if it is a small group of people working with the less fortunate they can get to know them individually and try to help them off of welfare or the support that they are getting. Granted there are some things that the less fortunate should have the opportunity to have and that is health care.
The Head Start program is an agency designed to help eliminate poverty in families with dependent children. While attacking risk factors, some of which include: poverty, lack of child care assistance, single parenthood, poor nutrition and diet this agency helps individuals and families to improve their circumstances. By providing benefits such as healthy meals, resources for families below the Federal Poverty level, and affordable child care assistance, the Head Start program can help families attain resiliency. “Of all the humiliations attached to being poor in a prosperous nation, not being able to feed your kids is at the top of the list.” Many parents are ashamed of getting assistance from the government because it is seen almost as a disgrace. Anna also suggests that many do not sign up for government assistance because, “The average length of a food stamp application is twelve often impenetrable pages; a permit to sell weapons is just two.” Such a long process just to get food for your family may seem like a very daunting task that many parents may not have time for.
Welfare America, home of the brave, the free, and the blessed! In this country many programs have been established to help those in need. One of these programs is welfare. Welfare is a public assisting aid, which gives citizens who live in the minimal level of poverty free money. This program is funded from the taxes payed by all working Americans.
2.Give one example of where your tax dollars go to contribute to a social welfare program, and give an example of how you directly or indirectly benefit from a social welfare program. Do you have to be poor to benefit from a social welfare program? Explain. Every time we get a paycheck, some taxes are withheld from it so that the government can pay to provide services. These social welfare benefits include the building and repairs of interstate highways and public parks which many uses such as myself.
It is very difficult to think that the parents I work with do not see how others are also victims of the system. In one account, a woman “did not socialize with neighbors, usually kept her curtains closed, and generally did not allow her young daughter to play outside.” This ideology, which has been inherited from the days of Raeganomics, creates distance within the communities we work with and further isolates our clients. However I think that this propaganda worked to discourage the creation of communities and further isolate welfare recipients. When we contract with our clients, we talk a lot about their support system and community supports are really lacking in their lives.
Low income families should not be receiving EBT because there are people who are in worse situations than them who deserve the EBT but cannot receive them while they haves jobs which at least give them money to support their family. If people do receive EBT then they would be abusing the system and reforms need to be made and we intend to regulate the increase on the wealthy and the way it would be decided is by searching their background in government help and decided whether they need it or not and it will go on by then. Those that need EBT are not allowed to receive them while, those that do not need them get to have it and benefit from them as shown in the EBT graphs. There are families out there who continue to have children knowing they do not have enough money to support their family but rely on the government thinking they are willing to help them out. Although, these families would take full advantage of EBT and housing when all they should do is stop having more children until they can support themselves without having anyone assist them or government provided aid.
How do you think the average American feels when he pays taxes to the government, just to know that it is going to people who use the money to buy drugs? According to Missouri, Oklahoma, Utah, Mississippi, Kansas, Tennessee, and Arizona only 10% of people receiving welfare are getting caught using drugs, the reason we only catch a small amount is the state government tells the recipients when they are drug testing them. In the technology we have today we can tell if a person is on drugs by three ways one way is urine, another way is blood and the last way is hair. These ways to drug test recipients are all efficient and effective. The most effective way is if you use hair to see if someone is using drugs you can usually tell for about 9 days it also depends on what drug they are using.
The Effects of the Foster Care System on Children Foster care is a system by which adults care for minor children who are not able to live with their biological parents. The minor is usually placed into a ward, group home, or private home of a state-certified caregiver, referred to as a "foster parent". The government or a social service agency usually arranges the placement of the child. Of the estimated 264,746 children who entered foster care during (FY) 2014: 45 percent were White. 22 percent were Black or African-American.
Over 35.4 percent of the United States is registered for welfare. An average family of four, that receives money from the government, can expect as least $500 in food stamps, and at least another $1,500 for whatever else, and top it all off, the government pays all bills and also for any medical visits for the family. The foster care systems has and will always be a part of society. The idea of a foster care system has always been around, even if it was not properly attained in the past. There has also been other methods to try to find placement for children with no or bad homes, for example the orphanage train, living with widows or living house to house in a community. Now in today’s time, we have an organized system of foster care with two different types of homes for children. For example we have group homes, which is a care facility that houses six or more children at a time.
I mostly grew up in poverty. We were the people that were thought as “smooching off the government.” My dad is retired and we both live off of social security. Throughout my entire schooling till the end of high school, I always received the free/reduced lunch program. We went to a lot of garage and yard sales growing up.
