SNCC In 2015 the majority of student's top priorities is doing well in school, however In the 1960s the students in SNCC top priorities were to make a change and get equal rights for African Americans. SNCC stands for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. SNCC was created at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Ella Baker invited student protest leaders to the conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. At the conference it was decided to create a group for student protesters (Britannica). SNCC was created to help with the civil rights movement by doing nonviolent protest for voter registration laws and the desegregation of restaurants and buses. SNCC worked to give African Americans a voice in elections and politics. Even though African Americans were able to vote they had some obstacles.Sncc workers are even asking President John F. Kennedy to take some action to stop the discrimination and treats made for the black voters.“President Kennedy asking that he take immediate steps to halt harassment of Negro voters in Mississippi and threats and intimidations made against those who try to aid them(Inquirer)". Southern states that did not favor that African Americans being able to vote made it difficult for them by using literary test, threats and violence. President JFK got involved after seeing all the violence and burning of buses. He asked the governor of Alabama to take control of the situation and guarantee safety for the passengers on the bus. However when the protesters arrived to montgomery there protection stopped and they were beaten by a mob. It wasn't only the blacks that were getting beaten by this point also the whites that were associated with them. Yet the protesters continued on the Freedom Rides to prove again violence will not stop them.
