There is many reasons why there was racial laws made in late 1800’s and the early 1900’s. African-Americans had many struggles due to racism. Many agreements were made like the Jim Crow Laws and Grandfather Clauses. Those two including; Separate But Equal, Plessy vs Ferguson, Poll Taxes, and Literacy Tests. Around 20 Jim Crow Laws were invented through 1866 and 1995. Some Segregated railroads, some required school segregation, others outlawed miscegenation, other ones requiring segregation for public accommodations, and also some that mandated segregation for streetcars. An example is the one in 1870 which had to do with education. Whites and colored students would have to be separated. Also, there was separate buildings for whites and black patients in hospitals. In order to vote, citizens had to do some things before They had to do Poll Taxes, in which required a person to pay before an election occurred so that they could vote. Anyone that paid the fee was eligible to pass the Poll Tax. Literacy tests had to be completed too, which was a requirement to prove that their education was high enough to vote. The test was given to anyone who wanted to vote. But for the African Americans, they had made the test where is was like impossible for them to get the answers right. If they got one wrong answer, they have failed. The Grandfather Clauses was another reason that held African Americans from voting. The clause made it possible for whites that who could not pay and/or that did not own property to vote. If the father or the grandfather of a citizen had been able to vote, then they would also be able to vote. They would be able to skip over the Literacy tests and the Poll Taxes. The main point of theses clauses were to put many more options for the African Americans to not vote and to help out the
