Sacagawea’s Guidance Sacagawea is known as an important historical figure mainly because of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Although she didn’t take full control to lead it, she was a huge impact on their expedition. Sacagawea was an Indian who helped them because she knew more about where they were exploring, who they were dealing with, and what they would come across. She contributed by her Native American heritage, being geographically accustomed to the area, and through cultural aspects.

When she told Charbonneau that she remembered the Shoshoni language, he decided to take her along on the voyage. He saw it as an advantage because she would be able to speak to her people in Shoshoni, translate it to him in Hidatsa, and he could translate it to other men in French, which would then be translated into English for both Lewis and Clark. Sacagawea wasn’t excited to go on the voyage because she was pregnant, but her husband reassured her by saying that the men seeing her pregnant would be helpful. It would encourage the men on the voyage and remind them that the purpose of the expedition wasn’t for war, but to help their families and the people around them. Along the voyage, she began to remember the country and exactly where she was. She recalled places like the Beaverhead Hill, which was where she was kidnapped, and Shoshone trails, which led them to the Yellowstone River.
