I have been in an empowering relationship for a little more than three years now. Before I embarked on this relationship, I have been in ones similar, but none even half as influential as my current relationship with my high school, Sacred Heart Academy. While Sacred Heart has, without a doubt, helped me know myself better academically, it has truly facilitated in knowing my own potential as a woman. Sacred Heart is not like your average high school; it is an all-girls Catholic college preparatory high school, and choosing to attend it was one of the best decisions of my life. One of the biggest things I learned of myself is my ability to lead. Two maxims my school preaches to us girls is to “Lead with Heart” and to “Take the Lead.” Having this encouragement to transcend in whatever we do showed me that women can do anything that men can do; at Sacred Heart the valedictorian is a girl, the class clown is a girl, the best athlete is a girl, the class president is a girl, the president of every club is a girl. The implementation of a strict uniform code redirects a great deal of focus from who is up with the latest styles and trends to academics; having gone to a public middle school, I can personally vouch for the validity of this statement. In Sacred Heart, the “competition” is not on whose hair looks the prettiest or whose makeup looks the best, rather the “competition” is on who is the smartest or who can the best student. This beneficial sense of competition really pushes you to want to be the best person you can be. Furthermore, because Sacred Heart preaches a message of inclusive love, I have not made a community of classmates, but rather a family of sisters. My Sacred Heart sisters have allowed me to surpass my initial introverted feelings and have given me a sense of acceptance in the classroom.
