Summary: This article is about a man named Jaime Prater who was born and raised in Jesus People USA (JPUSA), a religious community where the leadership clothes you, feeds you, educates you, and basically raises you. JPUSA were started by hippies who used to travel through the USA, but soon settled down in Chicago, and is now run by an authoritarian leader and councilship members. Jaime Prater was born into this community and thought of it as his family, but when he was 8 years old he was molested. He took it to the council, but they shut it down to stop spreading rumors and isolated him. In isolation, he felt lonely and scared for three and a half years, and left the comminity in his early 20’s after he realized that he didn’t belong.
Larry Eskridge began his book, God’s Forever Family: The Jesus People Movement in America, as a dissertation under David Bebbington; however, it soon became the leading scholarly book about the Jesus People. The Jesus People Movement started in the Bay Area in 1967 and became a prominent fixture of the 1960s and 1970s in the United States. This movement was an appeal to the hippie culture and evangelical youth, which eventually became, what Eskridge argues, one of the most important religious movements of the 20th century.
Billingsley expands upon the issue of male youth in relation to the Black church in his chapter, “The Black Church and the Male Youth Crisis”. In the section, Billingsley introduces the issue of youths being uninvolved in the church making it difficult for the church to fulfill the necessary function of addressing youth concerns such as drug abuse, academics, etc. The issue is particularly salient when it comes to young black males because they lack many of the other role model’s others would have to help them. Yet, in response, Billingsley questions the legitimacy of the church non-action by discussing four churches who have already addressed the issue.
A gift from God: The young Messiah in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road The Road shares the rough journey of a man and his messianic-figure son struggling to survive the morality of a post-apocalyptic world. The earth is destroyed and a majority of the once living are now deceased, however, the boy and his father continue to travel through their burned world. On their route south towards the coast, they find injured “good” guys and “bad” guys including thieves, shelter, clothes, and little food and water.
The main purpose throughout the article is to specifically persuade the intended audience. Particularly the author wants meatatarian fast-food restaurants to incorporate relatively inexpensive ingredients that can grow into productivity. Though the author mentioned various quotes that perhaps strengthened his argument to an extent, his inability to implicate different forms of persuasion significantly weakened the message that he was trying to deliver. Mark Bittman’s article “Fast, good and good for you” is ineffective in using rhetoric because of his overuse of logos rather than using other appeals to persuade.
The Road To Redemption When seeking redemption it 's never easy it 's a long and sometimes dangerous road for the character Amir in the Kite runner His road of redemption is filled with danger After seeing something horrible happen to his friend in the ally and not doing anything to help amir is filled with guilt for most of his life until he finally gets his chance at redemption after many years he is asked by an old friend to save the son of the boy he had betrayed all those years ago this is why Khaled Hosseini’s novel, The Kite Runner, teaches the reader That It’s never too late to get redemption through Amir and his guilt and his actions. When amir was young he witnessed something horrible and he felt extremely guilty about the actions
This chapter focuses on the importance of recognizing the symbolic elements of Christ. In the New Testament of the Christian Bible, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came from Heaven to earth in the form of man to fulfill the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah. He is believed to have lived a perfect life, free from sin, and to have died on a Roman cross for the sins of the world. Sometimes, writers use their characters to represent Christ in different ways. These symbolic characters are known as Christ figures.
Writing about controversial subjects can often be difficult; however Hughes executed his story, Salvation, in an intriguing manner that is suitable to all audiences and religions. In this story, the writer retells an experience from his childhood describing his journey to Jesus Christ. Discussing the complications, the main character, Hughes, faced while trying to come to Jesus is what makes the story interesting to read. On many occasions, you will read a story or watch a movie that shows the main character coming to Jesus and having an immediate and obvious realization of their Savior. For this reason, I found this story to be unique and relatable in the way that it shows a journey that countless Christians face, but you are not often granted the opportunity to read about this type of experience.
RIIINNNGG!! The buzzing alarm sounded at 6:30, and I frantically jumped out of bed eager to begin my first missions trip. I scurried down the stairs with my bags and jumped into the car en route to Eureka High School to meet the team I would be experiencing my journey with for the next week. When I arrived at the school, a few friends of mine were waiting, but most of the people I had never seen in my life. My heart started to pound against my chest as I suddenly became nervous, second guessing myself on deciding to come on the trip in the first place.
