The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, takes place in the spring of 1692 in Salem Massachusetts, where on one night a group of girls were up to no good. Betty, Abigail, Mary, Ruth, Mercy, and other girls were caught dancing around a fire in the forest for more than just sport. Reverend Parris (Betty’s father) caught the girls in the act and believes something far worse was going on than just dancing. The townspeople believed witchcraft was about. Mr. Parris would not speak of such witchery going on in town to his congregation, especially when involving his own daughter. Instead of the girls owning up to their wrong doings, they pointed their fingers at innocent people. Claiming that they sent their spirits to do harm to them. Stating that they would make them drink blood, force them to do the devil's work, chock them, and hurt them without the person ever being there. Rebecca Nurse, Sarah Good, Elizabeth Proctor, and John Proctor are just a few who are being accused of such accusations. The townspeople however did believed the girls and it all ended up in court. The judge, Judge Hathorne, would then take these ones who were accused to trial. Hale hopping that John would come clean, bring wife Elizabeth to talk to John. For a moment they are left alone and John had made up his mind. Proctor had confessed to the Devil's work and to turn away to be with God. But John dosen’t give up the anyone else name nor did he let the Marshal hang his confession on the door or the church. They argued about it and in doing so John had said he has lied and signed himself to lies. The marshal then sees that Proctor confession isn't true. John rips up the confession and is taken to his death, marking the end of the
