Do you know what happened in Salem, Massachusetts during the early to mid 1900s? A major event within the time period were the Salem Witch Trials. The trials were important because of the sudden outburst of witches appearing around the village. This certain time period, people were very religious and disliked all acts that were from the devil. They thought witchcraft was an act from the devil. A certain individual by the name of Abigail Williams set out to terrorize the village during the play; “The Crucible.” Abigail started causing chaos around the village of Salem by accusing others of practicing witchcraft which causes many conflicts around the village. The first person Abigail accuses is Tituba, she accuses Tituba after Paris discovers Abigail and her group of friends dancing in the forest. When Mary Warren agrees to help John Proctor, Abigail accuses Mary Warren because she agreed to confess that she never had any connections with the devil. Abigail’s final accusation is on John Proctor’s wife; Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail was on a quest for revenge. She wants revenge on Elizabeth for making John Proctor kick her out of the house because of their history. In the beginning of the play, Abigail consumes a blood charm. The sole purpose of the blood charm is to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail wants Elizabeth dead, so Abigail can come in and take John Proctor all to herself without any competition. Abigail is very desperate for John Proctor’s love, and would do anything in her way to get with John Proctor. When Abigail made the false accusation about Hale’s wife, she left with Mercy Lewis to a different town. They left the other girls that were helping her set up the accusations, to fend for themselves. These certain acts make Abigail seem very selfish, and is only doing things for her
