In the excerpt from the opening of The Beet Queen , Louise Endrich, portays Karl and Mary as an addition and subtraction to the town of Argus. Louise Endrich shows the role the environment plays which has an impact on how the two children are viewed through literary devices such as, imagery, her point of view, and selection of detail. Every day people are affected by the environment in which they are in. Everyone is affected differently by their surroundings just how Karl and Mary were affected differently by arriving at Argus. How people react to the situations they are put in exhibits their qualities and ability to handle tough situations.
In society, from the 1800s to the 1950s to today, there frequently is the assumption that it is necessary to put the needs and importance of the community in front of one’s own. Though this may seem out of place in some situations, in others it is simply protocol in order for the society to function smoothly. But in the cases of Edna Pontellier and Ethan Edwards, two seemingly very different characters, they both share the same struggle between their own personal interests and those of society. Edna, a Kentucky native married to a New Orleans Creole, faces her own private conflict as she does not understand the culture of this traditional society. While she is expected to be a loving mother and a doting wife, she feels conflicted while loving another man and not following the ways of a mother-figure.

Because of the way Miss Strangeworth is, all horrible actions must have a consequence and she finds out the truth of that statement when her vintage old self turns into the evil lady that no one has seen before, and she realizes that she wants more control than she has, basically a god complex.

Similarly, this quality is seen in humans. Teachers for example, can create a test to seem so difficult that everyone is most likely to fail. Mrs. Hopewell’s Denial Discombobulated, deranged, or in denial? In Flannery O'Connor's short story, “Good Country People”, Mrs. Hopewell’s character reflects a life of denial as she lives with her still at home, thirty-two year old daughter, Joy. Throughout the story, Mrs. Hopewell denies Joy’s physical as well as mental state by treating her as an unknowledgeable child and by believing that Joy will one day be a successful woman, all because her own desires for Joy do not become reality. Cassie Sullivan was given her name by her father when they went on a field trip where he took her to a planetarium, that he also went to as a little kid. While there he saw the constellation Cassiopeia and became very interested in it and later named his daughter after it. Cassie is now a sixteen-year-old girl that now happens to be an orphan. She 's a very young girl that also happens to be falling in love with an alien. That usually isn 't very normal for a sixteen year old teenage girl.
Sally Seton is a character who is self-aware. We are not given moments of self-reflection from Sally Seton, but she has existed in the memories of three characters and is only proven to be the same person from different perspectives. Peter and Hugh have alienated Sally for her economic class, but she never questioned her place in a society where one’s worth was equivalent to their social status. Sally was aware she did have a high social status in society and took control of her position. Her status allowed her to move and act freely.
