In the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the main character Salva survives many challenges due to his relationships, perseverance, and luck. Salva is at school when the civil war between Sudan and Southern Sudan reaches his village, and Salva is forced to run away, and to become a refugee. He befriends other refugees along the way, and he survives, regardless of all the challenges he is faced with. Salva’s relationships with other people along the way helped him to survive. Salva was left behind in a barn alone, and he befriended an older woman and helps out with chores.
The book “A Long Walk To Water”, features the main characters Salva and Nya. Salva had to escape South Sudan’s dangerous environment (1983 Sudanese civil war) and follow a group to one of Ethiopia's refugee camps. On the way, Salva experienced multiple deaths of people he was close to (his uncle and friend), so when he got to the refugee camp he had nobody. After moving through many refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, there was a program that picked groups of these refugees to live in America, and Salva was picked. In America, he lived with a host family in New York City but then finds out his biological family is still alive.
Salva s determination to always be motivated and keep going is a major survival factor in A Long Walk To Water. For example, when Savla's uncle dies to the Nuer rogues in the desert, he motivates Savla to keep pushing like his uncle would want him to. Salvas thoughts are described as “What matters now is that Savla is on his own now” (Park, 72). This quote shows how Salva survives with determination.

The novel expresses many important aspects of life, family, safety, growth, and belonging, mainly through the characters Nya and Salva. Nya is shown struggling due to her daily sixteen-mile walk to dirty water and her lack of an education. On the other hand, Salva struggles as he was separated from everyone he knew during the war in South Sudan.
The book "A Long Walk to Water" talks about how a boy named Salva has to live his life. The part about Salva is real, but the author(Linda Sue Park) decided to spice it up and add a fictional character. The fictional character is named Niya. She has a sister that almost dies in the book. But, as I said she is not real.

The first example that perseverance is an important theme is how Nya walks back and forth to a faraway pond 2 times a day, every day, for seven months a year without stopping. Also, on the path, there are thorns everywhere that are painful to remove. Nya only gets a small bit of water and rest even though it is very hot and dry. Even the water that Nya gets with much pain and suffering is muddy and infected with Guinea Worms.

His uncle uses his full name, and Salva thinks of his family. Uncle tells him to only walk as far as that bush, or clump of rocks. Salva perseveres by thinking of his family.
