The author of the story A Long Walk To Water shows many different tones in the book. During the time when Salva and the tribe, he was walking with went through a desert. Those days in the desert were really painful and frustrating. The people barely had anything to eat or drink, so they had to go most of the way fighting their hunger and thrust. Salva didn't have very much water left in his gourd, so he had to take little sips to save some more for the next day. Here is a quote from this part of the story, “The sun was relentless and eternal: There was neither wisp of cloud nor whiff of breeze for relief.” During this painful journey through the desert, the author describes the tone as painful and frustrating in many methods.
