This detail shows that the characters have to persevere while digging for water every day. Another example is on page 41, where the author writes, "... Salva was able to make his feet move despite the cold terror throughout his whole body. " This shows perseverance because it demonstrates how the character keeps going, even though he has gone through something incredibly scary.
From pages 80 to 82, we learn that the refugee camp it says that ‘Salva made up his mind. He would walk south to Kenya… crowds of other boys followed him. Nobody talked about it, but by the end of the first day Salva had become the leader of a group of about fifteen hundred boys.’ This explains how Salva doesn’t panic and think irrationally about situations like the Itang refugee camp closing, and when he decides to walk to Kenya, he follows through and helps three-fourths of the group arrive in Kenya safely. Obviously, Salva’s determination and hard work helps him get through the factors
This shows the progression of Salva from dealing with so many problems to being in a stable position and helping others, so that they do not go through what he did, which is the first reason why the thematic statement is to persevere as whatever problem you are facing will resolve. If Salva had given up when he was in many of these issues, he would not have gotten the resolution at the end of his
Salva survives the dangers of his journeys because of hard work, perseverance, and his relationships. Salva survives some of his challenges because of hard work.
Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.
This quote shows how Salva's determination helped him survive the soldiers and the crocodiles. After that, he became the leader of about 1500 boys, so this quote proves that his determination was so strong, that he was able to persevere through the troubles. At one point in the novel, Salva, his uncle, and the group they are with are walking through the desert. It was very hot; Salva wanted to drink some water, but could only take tiny sips to save water and hit a rock so hard his tonenail came off but he kept on going. “Salva had never seen anything like the desert.
He joins another group of Dinka refugees to continue his journey. ‘Then he caught up with the group, determined not to lag behind, not to complain, not to be trouble to anyone.’ (22). This shows that Salva is focused on his own survival and will do whatever it takes to make it to safety. Salva swims across the Gilo river.
Salva is a survivor because he didn't get defeated by any of the animals, he almost got killed many times, and because his environment was very harsh. One factor that proved Salva is a survivor is because he didn't get defeated by all of the animals he crossed on his journey. Many people died while trying to cross the river because of the vicious crocodiles eating them and trying to kill them. “Later, he would learn that at least a thousand people had died trying to cross the river that day, drowned or shot, or attacked by .crocodiles”(79).
The first component that helps Salva survive is his hope. To hope means “to want something to happen or be true and think that it could happen or be true. ”(Merriam Webster Dictionary) Although he is let down at times, he does not diminish the idea of surviving this terrible journey.
Determination helped Salva get past obstacles in his life like when his Uncled died but he didn’t give up “It was almost as if they had left their strength with him” Salva’s group was ambushed by a bunch of looters they took everything valuable and killed his uncle.
Salva settled on the fact that “there is no one left to help me. They think I am weak and useless.-… They are wrong and I will prove it” (66) Salva no longer has anyone to support him and his group believe him to be incapable and unworthy. But Salva didn’t care one bit and was determined to get through the e trip alive. Salva fed on his uncle's words by saying to himself that “I only have to get through this day…”this day and no other” (73) Salva promises to focus on how to survive the refugee camp and to not plan for the future. Salva had been determined to survive for his deceased friend and uncle, he hadn’t let go of his will to live even through
Another reason perseverance is an important theme in A Long Walk to Water is because Salva had to cross the Aboko desert for 3 days. Also, “Salva’s shoes stood no chance against the hot stony desert ground. page 52 ,” which means that Salva's shoes were reduced to shreds and he had to walk on the hot ground for 3 days. Also, because Salva’s shoes broke, he lost a toenail by hitting it on a rock and still had to keep walking. In addition to that pain, Salva had little water and food to keep him going.
Many times has Savlas uncles words helped him through hopeless times. Salvas uncles words had encouraged Salva to go “ bit by bit, one step at a time”, so Salva thought, “ Perhaps…perhaps Salva could get through life at the camp in the way.” (72) As a result that Salva feels this way he is being encouraged by his uncles’ words, so that makes Salva feel stronger in a way. His uncle’s words help Salva, and encourage him through many of his challenges. Also in the book Salva remembers, “Most of all, he remembered how Uncle had encouraged him in the desert,”when
Salva stays motivated as the pile of struggles only get larger. In order to face the challenges ahead of him, Salva must stay positive and be ready for the worst. Salva’s will power comes from following his late Uncle’s wise words on focusing on the present and then applying them to his new life: “I need only get through the rest of this day”(72). Salva chooses to look at life in a positive perspective and live in the moment.
Perseverance is an important theme in A Long Walk To Water. The first example of Perseverance is when Salva listens to what his uncle says. His uncle uses his full name, and Salva thinks of his family. Uncle tells him to only walk as far as that bush, or clump of rocks. Salva perseveres by thinking of his family.
