Sammy Sosa is a very famous Hispanic-American and an even more renowned professional baseball player. He was born to the name of Samuel Peralta “Sammy” Sosa on November 12, 1968. Sosa was known as “Mickey” to his friends and family members. This nickname was given to him by his grandma who decided she liked the name after hearing it on a soap opera. He was born in the Dominican Republic. He was a professional baseball right fielder and broke many records. He played for four major League Baseball Clubs over his career which was 18 years long and started in 1989 and ended in 2007. He was selected to the National League All-Star team seven times. In order to provide for his now fatherless family, he helped support his family with being occupied with many different jobs. Sosa used baseball as a child as his “Happy Place”. Whenever he was feeling sad or angry, he would go work on his baseball skills. All this self-practice helped him later in his superior baseball career. At the age of 18 Sammy Sosa moved to the United States to play for a Floridian minor league baseball team. Almost three years later, Sosa debuted with the Texas Rangers, but was traded only a few weeks later to the Chicago White Sox. After being on the White Sox for three seasons, he became a player of the Chicago Cubs in 1992. He played with the Cubs for the majority of his career and set many of his records with them. Throughout his career, Sosa broke many records. One of the most impressive records is that he is the only player in Major League Baseball history to have hit 60 or more home runs in a single season three times. He is the all-time home run leader among all foreign-born MLB players ever. He is also one of only two players to ever reach 1600 RBIs (Runs batted in) in a season which he reached in 2001.
