Introduction “Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink,” laments the sailor Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner 1789. It means that despite being surrounded by water, we cannot benefit from it. It is because Earth’s water is 97% salty, and salty water isn't good for drinking or growing plants. But maybe if you take the salt out of the water you can able to drink and use it?
This research paper focuses mainly on utilizing small-scale type solar desalination and making it more efficient. In this part we will be discussing what makes us conduct the study and why it is important.

Lately, more than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. Even though water is the most abundant compound on Earth's surface, with 70 percent of the world covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is fresh. The rest is saline and ocean-based. Even then, just 0.3 percent of our freshwater is easily accessible, with much of it trapped in ice caps and snowfields of Antarctica and Greenland or in deep underground aquifers. In essence, about 0.007 percent of the planet's water is available to fuel and feed its 7 billion people.

Solar desalination uses the heat of the sun directly in a simple piece of equipment to purify water. It is commonly called a solar still and consists primarily of a shallow basin with transparent glass cover. The sun heats the water in the basin, causing evaporation. Moisture rises, condenses on the cover and runs down into a collection trough, leaving behind the salts, minerals, and most other impurities, including germs.

This covers creating affordable device and creating sufficient water to sustain large families. The study consists of using materials that is easily found and inexpensive. The time allotted in this study is one quarter (approx. two months). The study does not cover making portable water with or out of poisonous chemicals that needs intense treatment such as mercury, lead and snake venom. The researcher limited this research to salty water and freshwater from river and ponds. Since the researchers are not near and source of sea water, the researchers are limited on using a brine
