However, the fact is that most Americans have the impression that Hispanic immigrants are perceived as a threat for not assimilating into the American mainstream, more so into the Anglo-Protestant values. Why is that? Is it for fear that the Spanish Language may overrun the country? Similarly, Neil Foley, author of, Mexicans In The Making of America, asks the same questions, why fear? In his prologue chapter, Foley makes a point by proving the fact that in the past, Mexican immigrants were not a concern but were, “ let in to provide the labor force for the rapidly expanding economy”(2).
It brought back memories of my own childhood as the child of immigrants. Specifically, when I relocated from the multicultural community of Cote-Des-Neiges to the mostly white suburb of Dollard des Ormeaux. When I was growing up, I struggled to balance my desire to embrace Filipino culture with my need to fit in with my peers. Despite my efforts, I always felt like an outsider. I believe I felt that way because I did not have a foundational knowledge of my parent’s culture and my parents were trying hard to just fit in their new life in Canada.

In what ways do Mexican Americans and Asian Americans share similar parenting challenges? One of the biggest dilemmas that they face is the redirection of familistic living. Asian and Mexican Americans have traditionally lived in homes with generational members all under one roof. Family members did not live in separate homes neither did they practice “living the nest” manners as native Americans do. Children are encouraged to live at home until they found a spouse and were ready to marry.
Assimilation is usually meant to indicate what happens to immigrants in a new land. For six years I have known my friend “Annie Valentin” from a community college, the second generation of Filipino Americans. Although I never knew much about her family immigration background and experiences. Her parents born in Manila, Philippines, Mr. Valentin was born in the 1940s and Mrs. Valentin was born in the 1950s. They immigrated to the United States in the 1970s for jobs offered. Like countless first generations of Filipino American from the post-1965 wave, they have achieved a high educational level.
America’s identity is defined differently by every individual. Ideally it was to be a place of freedom and acceptance, identified by its message of liberty and hard-work, however the question arises whether America is a melting pot in which only one culture dominates or it a mosaic of many peoples’ histories. America’s potential and true identity lies within its ability to assimilate and create a natural individualism despite race, class, and immigration standing. A country as powerful and influential as America is within industry, politics, and socioeconomics cannot be abstract in definition.
“The Immigrant contribution” and “The Quilt of a Country” are two essays that share a similar focus, however, they cover two drastically different sides of the topic. Both of them share the main idea that America is a country made up almost entirely of immigrants. Kennedy’s essay, “The immigrant Contribution”, focuses on how immigrants have affected our country, whereas Quindlen’s essay discusses how people of many different cultures coexist and work together. The essays both concentrate on immigration in America and how immigration has shaped and molded our culture.
