In the story, Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros, the author describes how difficult it is growing up in a Mexican family. Being the only daughter out of 6 boys, her father expected a lot out of her. Sandra did not spend a lot of time with her brothers, they thought that it was embarrassing to spend time with a girl in public, so she spent most of her time alone. The loneliness would mold her into her future career, a published writer. Her father strongly believed in marriage for her daughter, but Sandra had other dreams for herself. Sandra sought out her father’s approval, and ached for his blessing. Even though Sandra committed her life to education, in her fathers eyes she was a disappointment because she had not been wed to a young professional.
