Approximately one man in seven will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their life time. Elliot Gilbert nearly sixty year of age, lamentably becomes that one man out of seven. In the novel “Wrongful Death”, Sandra Gilbert spells out her and her family’s arduous journey with losing her significant other. This excursion includes the fight to find want happened to Elliot in that recovery room which turns out to be his last moment of life. As stated by the NYU School of Medicine “Wrongful Death”, “is a disturbing, but useful story of how personal loss and grief are complicated by uncertainty, anger, and an outraged sense of justice”.

On this day Elliot Gilbert was diagnosed with prostate cancer by Dr.Humphrey in Berkeley. Dr.Humphrey is Elliot’s Urologist. There are four stages of prostate cancer. Elliot prostate cancer is in the “B” or “C” stage. It is never clarified which exact stage the cancer is in. After hearing this news, they meet with several physicians to get opinions of operations Elliot could undergo. Dr.Humphrey recommended surgery to remove the prostate gland, and to follow that procedure with radiation. Another physician whose name is not mentioned suggests an orchiectomy. The last expert they meet with is Ralph deVere White. At the time this meeting takes place Dr.Humphrey is presently scheduled to perform the surgery. During the meeting Dr.deVere White, an Irishman says that radical surgery is the best option and only radiation will be done if necessary. Dr.deVere White appealed to Elliot the most, so he will now be the one performing the prostatectomy. The procedure had to be rescheduled because when they Dr.Reitan introducted a respiratory tube for anesthesia there was failed intubation. Dr.Reitan is an anesthesiologist and a friend of Elliot’s.
