Throughout our lives, we were teached to think of Santa Anna as one who opposed Texas, and was therefore malicious. The truth is, his character was not exactly just that. Our whole lives, we have learned about Santa Anna in the American perspective, but if we look at him from a different point of view, he was a great leader of Mexico. Santa Anna’s characteristics are mainly rebellious, courageous, and at sometimes, contradicting.
Santa Anna was a very rebellious being, from when he was a child until he died. The reason that I believe so is because he has done many things that do not appeal to the others surrounding him. “However, if his school years were short, his stint at working behind a counter was shorter. Santa Anna turned against his father and categorically stated that he had not been born to be a “ragman(tapero).”(Fowler, 19) This sentence from Will Fowler’s book gives a general idea of how he was like. The reason some may disagree on the fact that he was not courageous is because he cowardly tried to escape during the Battle of San Jacinto, while those in his command were dying. When he was asked where Santa Anna was, he faked it and said that Santa Anna ran away, even though he was Santa Anna. He has some courage because Santa Anna kept on fighting many wars even after he was injured a couple of times. “He received his first wound, an Indian arrow in his left arm or hand, in 1811. In 1813 he served in Texas against the Gutiérrez-Magee expedition, and at the battle of Medina he was cited for bravery.”(TSHA) This may sound like nothing, but going on an actual war is scary, even more with a handicap like a wooden leg or injured
