According to Jessica Statsky’s essay titled Children Need to Play, Not Compete, most children under the age of 12 do not need competition in sports. Claiming that organized sports are not “satisfying nor beneficial” for young children, Statsky expresses her concerns over a few issues. Supporting her thesis, Statsky discusses the negative physical and psychological effects of competitive sports. She further asserts that most children do not enjoy competition by citing a study about how most children would prefer to be on a losing team that allowed everyone to play rather than a winning team that may bench them due to performance. Also, she states ‘scorekeeping, league standings, and the drive to win bring(s) out the worst in adults’.
Youth Sports effect on young lives Youth sports can be a crucial part of developing kids life, not to mention their parents lives with all the driving, planning, organising, and the occasional drama from one soccer mom to another about how little timmy’s mom brought unhealthy snacks after the game. Youth sports have changed in many ways since I was little, now kids ,while dragging their family with them, are traveling across country for a game in a 8U league. Experts are always saying kids need to be more active, but to what extent some kids are spending their all their time playing these sports. But some aspects of sports have positives to them and some aspects are negative.
Children tie their sports performance to their self-esteem according to “The Pros and Cons of Youth Sports Aren't Only Physical”, and this could be very bad. “Who your child is as a person shouldn’t be tied closely to the ability to hit home runs or score touchdowns. If it is, that’s a guaranteed set-up for feelings of failure and low self-esteem” (Lindholm par. 3). Children that may be linking their self-worth to sports can make them not like it and make it an unenjoyable experience for them. While low self-esteem is one problem with sports, “The Pros and Cons of Youth Sports Aren't Only Physical” explains that high self-esteem could be another issue.
The University of Florida states that "student who regularly participate in sports are able to cope better with competition in other areas of their lives" (Maddox). The athletes can learn many things about how to act when they get older. You learn things such as how to act when you are disciplined, keep your commitments, concentration, and you gain self-confidence. Coaches discipline the students when they do something wrong like being late to practice or breaking a rule, this helps them to know to be places on time which also helps with commitment. While playing sports you need concentration.

The first reason that I believe supports my claim is that kids gain a sense of healthy competition that can prepare them for life. This can be seen in the article “Pros and Cons of Sports Competition at the High School Level” where Grace Chen, an education researcher, writer, and educator, states that sports and competition, “...help teens develop an array of personal skills, including resilience, attitude control, time management, and long term thinking abilities” (Chen 6).
Concentrating on winning or losing spoils the fun that games hold. In addition, equal chances should be provided to every child to participate. Competitive nature can assist the children in their life later on, but the focus should be on better mental and physical health.
