Calcium is one of the most abundant resources in the body and plays a vital role in our bodies. A daily dose of calcium is needed to strengthen our bones, teeth and other areas such as the sarcoplasmic reticulum which is directly responsible for the release of calcium during muscle contraction and absorption during relaxation. Higher Ca2+ release in the sarcoplasmic reticulum and helps in contributing the overall effectiveness of the cardiac muscle. This is done through daily intake of calcium which helps maintain the blood pressure, strengthens the contraction of the heart muscle and prevents obesity.

Since calcium is not made inside our bodies, they are derived from external sources such as milk, which is known to provide calcium to our body. The main storage unit for the sarcoplasmic reticulum is the cardiac myocytes (Picht et al., 2011). The contraction of the sarcoplasmic reticulum allows the release of more calcium which can therefore be pumped into the blood stream. This calcium supplementation reduces the systolic and diastolic blood pressure which in return helps in lowering and maintaining the blood pressure, preventing hypertension and other damages to the heart (Marks, 2003). …show more content…

Caffeine present in the cup of coffee has a direct impact on the release of Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. A daily dose of caffeine increases the Ca2+ concentration in the sarcoplasmic reticulum to a certain extent, which in turn strengthens the contraction of the heart muscle (Klein et al., 1990). This allows the heart to do the same amount of work without working as hard as it usually
