Welcome to America! A saying that immigrants see on post cards, billboards and signs but rarely hear from a human being unless it’s the result of cynicism. Come to America is not an existent term to most individuals either, however, it seems to be the voice in their head that looms forever pushing individuals towards the land of opportunity. Although being the land of opportunity seems to pass right by individuals entering the U.S. as they are met with disappointment, prejudice and deportation. While some may say that the individuals who receive this treatment are illegal immigrants however the topic at hand are the laws that are in place that makes said individuals. It is often argued that illegal immigrants only have detrimental effects on the economy as they only take and do not contribute or allow an ecosystem to thrive. Much like Philip Martin exclaims that president Trump has admitted in an address about immigration “they do not pay taxes and take benefits they do not deserve” (Martin). Admittedly Trump may have misinformation or does not effectively know how an economy works as statistics and an economic study shows. However, “in a study conducted by the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), it was found that illegal immigrants do pay taxes, with an estimate of $10.6 billion in 2010, meaning they are paying an average of 6.4 per cent of their income” (Martin). Therefore illegal immigrants in fact contribute more of their earnings than the average citizen. And interesting enough these people are illegal and therefore they aren’t making a lot of money as jobs pertaining to their niche aren’t that of executive stature and yet they are technically providing more of their paycheck to an economy they are technically making worse or rather nil
