Write about an aspect of the days reading that you don't understand or something that surprises you. For this blog post, I will be offering my thoughts on a concept and reality explored in the book that confused and astounded me. I also apologize, because this blog will largely be a rant. Bullying: I DON'T GET IT! Kim is exceptionally poor; she lives in a tiny apartment with her mother, that has no dishwasher, indoor heating, or AC. He clothes are homemade or hand-me-downs and new clothes are a very rare, very expensive privilege. Living in these conditions, Kim cannot afford to wear the clothes that the other girls wear, and at her new school, the other girls bully her relentlessly for it. I don't get it! I find this as no excuse. Is their own sense of self-worth, worth sacrificing someone else’s? Is fear of the unknown a just reason to allow cruelty to rear its ugly head. I do not believe so. I don’t get why people hurt others. One of the worst things about bullying is that parents can often do nothing about it. A stern talking to won't stop bullies from slipping a hurtful comment in the hallways or trying to trip someone. Even Kim's mom can't understand that anyone would bully Kim, and won't spend extra money trying to fix something that "no decent person would tease her about". It makes me sick that people bully other because they are different, or poor, or have difficulty in certain areas! What is the point of being cruel to others?! What baffles me is that people can be so mean to people whom they do not even know. I hate it, I hate it that people bully others that they know nothing about. Hurt, shame, tease, and degrade people who may be struggling, who may not have as much as they do, or are simply having a hard time. No one should be bullied for who they are, for what they can't change. People say life isn't fair as an excuse for almost everything that is bad or unjust in the world. Why can't we do everything in our power to make it fair? I believe the world would be a better place if people simply did their best to be kind
