Comparing Saw I and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter may seem like comparing oranges to oranges because they are similar in several aspects. Both movies employ a character known as Jigsaw, who forces victims to play horrific games in order to save themselves or loved ones. The name came about after police discovered skin had been cut from the bodies of victims in the shape of jigsaw puzzle pieces. The movies are, however, different in a couple of aspects. For example, the men known as Jigsaw are different in each of the two movies. More importantly, the nature and motivation of the two men are quite different. Gordon is later congratulated by Jigsaw for surviving the test. As a reward, John Kramer took care of Dr. Gordon while he recovered from amputating his foot. Dr. Gordon became Jigsaw’s trusted apprentice even by helping Jigsaw select new victims. Dr. Gordon vowed to protect Jigsaw’s wife, Jill Tuck, after Jigsaw’s death and seek revenge if she was ever harmed. In Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, Detective Mark Hoffman assumed the role of Jigsaw following the death of John Kramer. He continued the practice of putting people in practically impossible games to survive, but his games had practically no chance of survival for the victims. Furthermore, Detective Hoffman was more interested in inflicting pain and anguish just for the sake of pain and anguish, as opposed to John Kramer who sought to teach his victims to appreciate life. Ultimately, Detective Hoffman committed the fatal mistake of killing John’s wife, Jill. Detective Hoffman was abducted by men wearing pig masks and when he regained consciousness, he was chained to the same pipes as Adam and Dr. Gordon. As he desperately reached for the hacksaw on the floor, Dr. Gordon grabbed it stating, “I don’t think so” (“Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) Ending”).
