Doodle’s brother was his designated best friend whether he liked it or not. Although at first he didn’t like the idea of having a sibling but he saw that Doodle was “all there.” Brother said, “I skipped through the rooms, down the echoing halls, shouting, ‘Mama, he smiled. He’s all there! He’s all there!’
Scarlet Guilt In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the author uses symbols of death to show the main character's guilt for the events that take place in the story. Brother sees Doodle dead and bloody, author James Hurst writes “He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red.” This quote shows Brother’s remorse for pushing Doodle too far, Brother sees the wreckage of his own actions and can’t help but feel bad for what happened. In the next quote Brother is upset with Doodle for not being able to do normal things, James Hurst writes “I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow”. This quote shows Brother's guilt and shame for having a disabled brother.
Doodles brother was embarrassed to have a not all there brother. It was very clear at the beginning of the book that the brother wanted doodle dead. His brother never wanted to be around him because he was scared to be made fun of. He wanted doodle to run and swim and play like all the other children
In the story “The Scarlet Ibis” Doodle and the bird are the best representations of each other. One of the examples to show this is “He lay very awkwardly, with his head thrown far back, making his vermilion neck appear unusually long and slim” (Hurst 139). This exact quote from the story describes how they are alike because when they were both dead they had long and slim necks. The bird was also lying in an awkward position with its legs crossed and its “ clawlike feet were delicately curved at rest.” (Hurst 136).
The narrator of the story, The Scarlet Ibis, Doesn't give his name, but he tells about his time with his brother, Doodle. Doodle is a complex character in many ways, he was born a cripple but was, by some accounts, blessed, and Doodle also had the element of being a genius for his circumstances. On October 8, 1911 Doodle was born with a heart condition that left him physically and mentally disabled, and wasn't expected to live past infancy, but, by defying the odds, Doodle survives his first few years of his life. Some of the characters believe that this is because when he was born, he had been born in a caul. Which leads to the fact that, Doodle, was very smart and soon learned to talk and even walk.
Guilty Without a Doubt In The Scarlet Ibis, Brother and Doodles story is a perfect example as to why pride can be a destructive force. Doodle was pushed to the extreme by his brother. His brothers selfish pride took over his life and he just lost control, he couldn't handle it and his pride, and as a result an innocent life was lost, therefore Brother is guilty of Doodles death.
"Doodle!" I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain”(Hurst 6).This section shows from the end of Doodle’s life onward Brother has felt guilty. The whole story is Brothers story of the dangers of pride and his personal experience.
Acceptance, a basic principle taught at a young age. Also one of the many things James Hurst's “The Scarlet Ibis” symbolizes. We are all taught acceptance is a good thing, we are told we deserve it, and we are told we should not only seek it from others, but also give it to others. Yet, even after the bountiful lessons on acceptance, there are people who do not have the luxury of being accepted. A perfect example of one of those people is Doodle.
The quote “He seemed all head with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man’s”, Gave the reader a view of how fragile Doodle’s body is. They thought at first, he was not going to make it, but he ended up surviving. When the mom explains to the older brother, Doodle is different and will not be able to do things that other kids do, he is then disappointed at having Doodle as his brother. He wants to be able to do things with Doodle, like he would be able to do with the other kids,
Childhood is an important aspect of life that shapes a person into who they are. Both negative and positive aspects will follow through to all parts of their personality during life. In the novel, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a child Pearl is born through the sin of Adultery by her mother, Hester, and her father Dimmesdale. He is the minister of their Puritan community and thus keeps his identity, as Pearl's father, hidden until his moment of death, but Hester wears a scarlet A, embellished into her bosom, to remind her of the shame and guilt. Pearl seeks answers about her father from the moment she could talk but Hester refuses answers.
To Brother, the inability to walk is a sign of immaturity, while Brother tries to act mature. To Doodle, Brother is supposed to be a leader. He believes that his brother knows best.
“Brother” believed Doodle could run and catch up with him but “Brother” still did not fully understand Doodle’s condition. The narrator says, “I purposely walked fast, and although he kept up, his face turned red and his eyes became glazed. ”(422). In Brother’s mind, he thought he was doing a good thing for Doodle. With this in mind the condition of Doodle’s poor health did not worry “Brother”.
The Scarlet Ibis How did Doodle die? Why did Doodle die? Was it his Brother? Doodle was born a disabled kid who was loved by everybody in his family except his brother (The narrator of this story). The narrator wished for a perfect brother that his would be able to do things with but when he wasn’t given that it caused him to do things that no brother should ever do or think about doing to his younger brother.
He basically scared Doodle into walking, by painting a picture of what it would look like if he never learned to walk! Scaring people into doing things, especially kids, is not the best way to do it! More importantly, Brother left Doodle to die in the end of the book! Though this was not on purpose, it leaves one clueless to why he would leave his struggling brother behind in a lightning storm! Obviously, that doesn’t classify him as a good brother, but there are many other reasons why he can be classified as a good brother.
At first the narrator sees Doodle as a crazy frail brother but as we move into the story, we can observe a lot of varying feelings brother has towards Doodle. Brother described Doodle as unbearable, an invalid brother, a brother who was not there at all, so he started
