Judy Fong-Bates short story “The Gold Mountain Coat” and Susan Young’s poem “Wordsmith” portray a strained relationship between a father and his children. Both the fathers are distant from their children but while the father in “Wordsmith” makes sincere efforts to bond with his daughter, Sam sing from “The Gold Mountain coat” chooses to remain strict and unapproachable towards his two sons. From the beginning of both the pieces of literature, the main difference of love and approachability is evident. Sam Sing fails to show any emotion towards his sons even though they work hard for him in the chinese restaurant. Character Analysis People say money can’t buy you happiness, yet many still strive for it and will stoop to the lowest of levels to get more. In the short story Mortmain, written by Miriam Allen Deford, the female protagonist, Miss Hendricks, proves to be just another example of how one would drop all morals just for a little more money in their pocket. By analyzing Miss Hendricks personal history and motivations, the reader will understand the significance of her character to the overall story. Deford’s main character of this short story, Miss Hendricks, was a nurse who fell in love with a previous patient named Terry, who also happened to be a “professional bank-robber” (Deford 331).

As a senior, I chose to take composition two at Countryside High School in my last semester. I previously finished composition one and looked forward to enhance my comprehension of shorty stories and poems in composition two. I also wanted to receive dual enrollment credit for ENC1102 for my future education. Mr. Leo, my professor, taught the class in depth information on short stories by discussing the theme and symbols of the writings however, one short story in particular stood out to me that I will profoundly remember for years to come. Five years from now, I know I will remember the short story “A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell due to its meaningful symbolization and the overall irony.
Marxist Criticism, specifically the Hegelian Dialectic is applicable in Bambara’s short story, “The Lesson”. Social class is predominant at the time “The Lesson” was written and the story focuses on the main character, Sylvia’s perception of her own class, the struggles that it brings and what she is then introduced to by Miss Moore. The Hegelian Dialect can be applied to this story as the transformation ensues within Sylvia upon her enlightenment of the difference in social classes. What appeared to be anger, frustration and resentment within Sylvia, undergoes a conversion into an upheaval curiosity of a newfound “culture”. Does the enlightenment occurring within Sylvia, present a new synthesis of which she uses as a platform for change?
She begins by talking about her college experience of how her own professors and fellow students believed and “always portrayed the poor as shiftless, mindless, lazy, dishonest, and unworthy” (Paragraph 5). This experience shocked her because she never grew up materialistic. She brings up the fact that she is the person with the strong and good values that she has today because she grew up in a poor family. In culture, the poor are always being stereotyped.
“Thank You, Ma’am”, by Langston Hughes, is a tale about a young lad named Roger who attempts stealing to provide for himself, when instead he learns a valuable lesson. “The Necklace”, by Guy de Maupassant, is a story about a selfish woman named Mathilde and her husband, with a surprising twist at the end of the short story. These fables are going to be used to compare and contrast the messages of morality, socio-economic status, and family. On the topic of morality, Roger from “Thank You, Ma’am” and Mathilde from “The Necklace” are different.
In Gary Soto’s short story “The Jacket” the main character, the boy in the jacket, vows “ I spent my sixth-grade year in a tree in the alley, waiting for something good to happen to me in that jacket, which had become the ugly brother who tagged along wherever I went.” The boy blames his jacket for all the struggles that happened to him and he believes that the jacket brought him bad luck. Soto uses this to support the theme because the boy is being distracted by the jacket. Which makes him not try to improve his life.
Marta Salinas’ realistic fiction story “The scholarship Jacket”, takes place at a small school in Texas. Martha, a straight A plus student, was finally in 8th grade, her year to receive the valedictorian jacket. There are many troubles leading up to Martha receiving the jacket, such as the teachers changing the policy to make her pay $15. This changed the meaning of the jacket because it was no longer a reward. Marta Salinas created the theme that hard work pays off, she displays this theme by showing how Martha feels with point of view, and foreshadowing.
