As gardens are becoming more common in schools today, it is important to remember the first gardens were incorporate into the United States in the 1890s. The first one was established in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1890. In the 1900s, gardens were started in rural elementary schools and inner city schools. Gardens are found in all different areas and populations. It is the most popular in elementary schools in the west followed by the northeast and south. The least common place to find a school garden is in the Midwest. Programs in urban middle schools, are the most successful. Students that help with gardens at their home, take more interest in being involved with the school garden. Most of the school gardens grow plants for landscaping and
