“One thing is certain: The human brain has serious problems with calculations. Nothing in its evolution prepared it for the task of memorizing dozens of multiplication facts or for carrying out the multistep operations required for two-digit subtraction.” (Sousa, 2015, p. 35). It is amazing the things that our brain can do and how our brain adapt to perform these kind of calculations. As teachers, we need to take into account that our brain is not ready for calculations, but it can recognize patterns.
The common assumption that America is the leading nation in the world takes a hard hit in Amanda Ripley’s The Smartest Kids in the World, a book that explores the top education systems throughout the world, which are not that of the United States. After reading the book, it comes off with strong viewpoints, and makes you think critically about our education system. It highlights the PISA tests, both praised and criticized for their ability to calculate the knowledge and creativity and individual possesses. The book also features a unique narrative style involving three students from America embarking on journeys as “correspondents” to three of the tops ranking PISA countries.

Ofsted’s 2012 report ‘Made to Measure’ states that even though manipulatives are being utilized in schools, they aren’t being used as effectively as they should be in order to support the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts. Black, J (2013) suggests this is because manipulatives are being applied to certain concepts of mathematics which teachers believe best aid in the understanding of a concept. Therefore, students may not be able to make sense of the manipulatives according to their own understanding of the relation between the manipulative and concept. There are numerous factors that a writer would use to make the argument persuasive. In the article "Why America's Business Majors Are in Desperate Need of a Liberal-Arts Education" by “Yoni Appelbaum”, gives reasons why business majors might have trouble understanding skills having to do with what comes out of a Liberal Arts degree. More business in the future will be looking for somebody with a liberal arts degree to run a company, and some graduates won't have the right skills to make a difference.
In the article “Two Years are Better than Four,” Liz Addison argues that community college is better than four year universities, such as the one Rick Perlstein attended. Where Perlstein reminisces about his days in college and claims that the greatness of American colleges is gone. Addison makes it apparent to the reader that she not only disagrees with Perlstein, but makes remarks suggesting that she believes that Perlstein’s college days were less for studying and more for partying and enjoying the fact that he went to a fancy private college. Addison continues by detailing some of the opportunities for people that attend community college such as being affordable, a place for the student to begin, and possibly a better match for students’ lives. She claims that this is the way college is intended to be and by no means is college as we knew it coming to an end.
In Howard Gardner's article “Test for Aptitude, Not Speed”, he uses his knowledge and understanding of test taking to support his belief that tests, such as the SATs, should not be timed.. Gardener reflects on the College Board's announcement about no longer informing colleges and universities on whether or not a student had extra time to finish the SAT. Gardener is glad that the College Board has made this decision, however, he does not see why the SAT is required to be timed at all. He states how the SAT is designed to know what students have high intellectual capabilities. Although, students who are used to taking timed test have an advantage over those who do not. The article, “Should Partial Credit Be Awarded on Math Tests,” written by Dr. Lynne Gregorio, makes several good points on why partial credit should be counted on math test. One of the questions that gave a fair reason why teachers should count partial credit on math tests was, “Are all math teachers flawless?” (Gregorio) this question makes the reader think about how “we are human,” (Gregorio)and errors are always going to happen. Another thing that the author states in her article that gives a good argument is, “I also don't agree that life only allows for Right and Wrong answers... We are human , we make mistakes…”(Gregorio).
He begins by stating that many people assume that Asian students have an “innate proclivity for math” because Asian countries “have substantially outperformed their Western counterparts” in international mathematic exams (230). But in reality, Gladwell proved that Asian countries actually have a cultural advantage in the subject due to their number system. Most numbers in Chinese “can be uttered in less than a quarter of a second” while English numbers take a third. This difference allows Chinese children to memorize and count at an earlier age, leaving Western children a year behind at age five. Similarly, Gladwell cited Chinese culture of hardwork growing rice paddies as a reason for mathematic success.

Understanding- children need vocabulary related to the ideas presented Context- the mathematical concept must be understood by the child/children they need something to relate to, to back up what they are being presented with. The first example he gives demonstrates the ability of math, contrasting Western students and Asian students. The number-naming systems in Western and Asian languages are completely different. The number system in Asia is logical and the words are brief, allowing more numbers to be memorized and recalled. The opposite is true for the system in Western society. This difference allows Asian children to learn numbers much faster than American children.
Standardized testing has become one of the most popular types of testing in U.S. public schools to date. Students take numerous standardized tests throughout their childhood schooling. (Studies show that a typical student takes an average of 112 mandated standardized tests between Pre-K and 12th grade.) While standardized testing is one of the main procedures that Universities use to judge incoming students, it is not proven to be the most effective way to convey a student’s actual intelligence level. The U.S. should not focus so heavily on standardized testing because it is not a complete accurate measurement of a student’s intelligence.
