“Attention students, we are now going into a lockdown” having done this at least twenty or more times before: I sluggishly walk my way to the dark corner. As the lights go off I hear all the people around me talking and laughing. When I see this, it hits me. What is the point of this? Why do we still do these drills? Of course, I understand that they are put in place for our safety at school. However, they simply won’t work anymore. We have done these drills for years now and any shooter that comes in will know what our plan of action is. They will know that we are taught to hide in a corner and pretend that we aren 't in the room. This method is designed so that the shooter thinks that the classroom is empty and will leave that room alone. This may be effective at a school with empty classrooms but, at a full school like mine, there are rarely empty rooms. I am also aware that we are taught to get in a corner and get down low so that the gunman can’t see us and if they do start shooting, the bullets are less likely to contact us. They teach us what to do when the gunman is outside the door but what do we do if they get inside? We do not know. So, I propose a solution that will not only be beneficial to students, but will be beneficial to our veterans. Recently, there was a shooting in Oregon and a veteran stopped the shooter from entering a classroom. He distracted the gunmen and helped save the people in the room. He was shot seven times while doing so but remained alive and is still recovering. Veterans have instincts that we don’t even train police to have. I propose that we use veterans in our schools and our public areas that, are prone to random acts of violence. We will not need to arm them and we won’t need to train them. Our veterans have so much extensive training that they would not need a weapon to be effective in a life or death
