Schools Should Teach Non-Abstinence Based Sex Education

Teenage pregnancy has become an epidemic in the Wichita Falls area. This area has a high percentage of pregnant teenagers in school than the national average due to the traditional thinking of this region. To help combat this epidemic, schools should teach non-abstinence based sex education class and have free condoms available to students rather. By teaching students about the aspects of sex and making condoms available, the number of teenage pregnancies should decrease because the number of students participating in safe sex would increase. The Wichita Falls area is plagued with an ever increasing amount of teen pregnancies with each new school year. It would be hard press to find someone that doesn’t know of at least one person from their high school that was pregnant or had a child before their graduation. …show more content…

The current sex education curriculum teaches only abstinence; that if one has sex before marriage it will lead to either becoming pregnant or developing an STI. By changing the curriculum to teach students about safe sex and how to properly use condoms the class teaches students how to reduce the risks related to sex. The new sex education curriculum would also teach students about the aspects of a healthy relationship and what can make up an abusive relationship, such as pressuring one to have sex. The sex education class would also go into the expense related to having a child. It would also be a requirement to take home a robotic baby for 2 weeks to learn how demanding having a child is. By teaching students more about different relationships, the expense and the struggles of raising a child as a student, it would cause students to take more precautions when having sex.
