Epidemic in Pueblo County

Approximately four out of ten young women in the United States will become pregnant at least once before the age of twenty. (Facts in Brief: Teen Sex and Pregnancy). There are many solutions that the government and education system have tried inorder to prevent the number of girls that become pregnant.. Thousands of teenage girls and their families will face the challenge of an unplanned pregnancy this year. Some will decide to become teen mothers and raise a child, others may choose adoption, and some will choose abortion. Pueblo County has the second highest teen pregnancy rate in the state of Colorado. If teenage pregnancy is such a major problem, why haven’t the parents of Pueblo stopped it? Some solutions have been proposed in order to inform and teach teens about getting pregnant. Teenage pregnancy programs are important to show the outcomes of an unplanned pregnancy. These programs should be studied to ensure that they are used in the correct manner, and so that teens understand the consequences of having a child. One way of making sure is to talk with the teens themselves. Ask what they think about sex, and how it is portrayed in their school life, by their friends, in their families, and in the media. One particular icon that stood out to young girls was Jamie Lynn Spears. She was named the all “All American Girl”, by Teen Vogue because of the sweet innocent roles she played as part of the Nickelodeon family. Jamie soon showed her true colors when, at the age of only 17, she released to the public that she was pregnant with her daughter. The announcement of Spears's pregnancy generated controversy, as the media was accused of using the story to "glamorize" teenage pregnancy. Is this what we are advertising to the young women in America? That it’s appropriate for young girls to become sexually active, become pregnant and flaunt themselves?
