Scientific Advancement Furthers Society’s Downfall
In the novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley the society presented is becoming more and more similar to the society that humans live in today. The reason that these societies are becoming more and more similar to each other is the further advancement of science and technology. Scientific advancements are what keep this world turning; it’s what keeps the humans moving in the right direction, or so humans think. Similarly the society of Brave new World has already gone through these scientific advancements, but with these types of advancements comes corruption of the mind. I feel that if the direction humans has chosen is continued, our fate will be the same as those that chose to create the desolate society. As this happens ideas of advancement occur not only through human development, but also scientific advancement as well. The idea of cloning mammals has been around since the year of 1930’s when a man named Hans Spemann first purposed the idea of cloning. It wasn’t until the year of 1997 when the first successful cloning occurred with a sheep named Dolly (Wikipedia). With this in mind the book Brave New was written in 1931. Huxley was referring to the topic of cloning almost seventy years before the actual ability of cloning was discovered. In Brave New World, the use of cloning is rampant throughout the world. This is the main way that people in the society were decanted. Proof of this is located in chapter one of the novel, “From eight to ninety-six buds, and every bud will grow into a perfectly formed embryo, and every embryo into a full-sized adult. Making ninety-six human beings grow where only one grew before. Progress.” Research into this topic has already begun and cloning has continued to develop.
