In the second stave of the book Scrooge was feeling regret of what he did in the past. Evidence of regret is on pages 50-51. They are saying, “I not know your repentance and regret would surely follow? I do; and I release you. With a full heart, for the love of him you once were.”
The change that occurs in stave one is Scrooge “undergoes in emotion.” The portly gentlemen come and ask for a donation, but Scrooge said “Why can’t they go to Deader’s Prison?” Scrooge ended up making them go away and he felt emotion. That reminds me of my mom because when people ask for a donation she always says no.
At the beginning of the novella, Scrooge is presented as selfish and stingy because he simply does not understand the poor and the struggles they go through as he is only focused on his materialistic needs and views the poor as the “surplus population”. In stave 1, he is described as a 7 negative adjective, for example “squeezing and wrenching” which has connotations of struggling as scrooge struggles to assimilate with society and doesn't understand that the poor often lead very hard lives due to people like scrooge (especially businessmen) who don’t donate to charity, treat their workers horribly and belittle the poor. Scrooge is presented as one who is too focused on his selfish gains through his love for money, completely forgetting to
Dickens explores the theme of transformation in his novella- A Christmas Carol- by Scrooge’s attitude to the poor and how it converts over the course of his redemption. As a result of his divine intervention; he changes from a selfish and self-centred man consumed by greed to someone charitable and caring. The most notable difference in Scrooge is how he views those living in poverty and the struggles they face. In the opening Stave of the novella, Scrooge is clearly demonstrated as apathetic to those other than himself.
In Staves 3 and 4 of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge undergoes a drastic change in personality due to the events shown by the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come. At the end of the novella, Scrooge is found to be a better man. He learns to be charitable and to value family and companionship. PARAGRAPH 1 Stave 3 affects Scrooge immensely as it shows him that Christmas is a time to be shared with loved ones and that it should not matter whether the person is rich or poor. An example being the Cratchit family as they have little in the way of money but they abound in love and joy.
Stave 1- Greed The main theme in stave 1 of A Christmas Carol is greed. The reason I think Scrooge is very greedy is because he doesn’t like to give and is usually self absorbed. Scrooge is also a very demanding man, he only wants the answer that he likes best. He doesn’t like happy things and his word choices are usually sad.
In the first stave, Scrooge, although he is wealthy, is such a miser that he won 't even allow his clerk to have enough coal to keep him warm. He insists on saving money by burning only enough coal to keep a small flame glowing whether the heat that it puts out is sufficient to keep the clerk warm or not. Scrooge 's greed is his downfall because he is so consumed with his money that he neglects the people around him, and when all is said and
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach,” (Dickens 46) Throughout his life, Scrooge has mistreated, disrespected, and taken almost everyone in his life for granted. He simply knows of no other way to treat the other people around him.
Scrooge's attitude to giving changes from Stave 1 to Stave 5. In Stave 1, Bob Cratchitt requests Christmas day off of work, to which Scrooge responds by saying it 'isn't fair', nor 'convenient'. This shows that he does not care for his employees' wishes and is against the idea of Christmas being a good excuse to not work. The fact that the majority of people don't work on Christmas Day shows that, despite his opinion differing from the predominance of people, he doesn't succumb to regular conventions and isn't manipulated at all. This promotes him to be an independent, lonely character which is also inferred at the beginning of the book where Dickens uses a rhetorical question to ask 'but what did Scrooge care?'.
In stave 4, Dickens opens stave 4 with “he recoiled in terror,”which demonstrates that Scrooge is now absolutely terrified of death rather than just a little bit scared. He steps back after noticing the shroud, demonstrating his inability to understand what he is seeing. The word "terror" connotes utter fear, anguish, and horror, and this is the first time we have witnessed Scrooge displaying such intense feelings. Dickens emphasises Scrooge's fear of death in the gothic depiction of the animals trying to enter the room of death, which is creepy and terrifying. " A cat was tearing" and "gnawing rats" are used as verbs to describe how the animals strive to enter.
Although skeptical in the beginning, Scrooge begins to understand why he must change his ways, and he discovers what he can do to become a better person. Throughout most of the first chapter, Scrooge is very greedy. When two kind men come and ask Scrooge for a small donation to help benefit the poor Scrooge asks if any of the prisons or poorhouses are still in operation, and the men tell him: “Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.” To which Scrooge replies with: “If they rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” Scrooge was already being greedy by not giving money to the men, but he was also being extremely rude by saying people should hurry up and die.
Stave One, Dickens uses a lot of different quotes and conversations to tell the readers how Scrooge really is, most of these quotes are found in the first few pages and describe how much of a horrible, cold hearted person Scrooge is. Scrooge is described as 'hard and sharp as a flint, ' flint is a type of sedimentary rock with a glossy and waxy appearance and inside it 's usually dark grey. Dickens has used this quote to describe Scrooge as an inanimate object and get the effect what he was like, it also describes the same appearance to scrooge that he was hard on other people and wouldn 't show people his true emotions. Another example of Scrooge being described to an object is 'self-contained, and as solitary as a oyster ' this is a simile which is suggesting that Scrooge was a secretive person, who kept himself to himself and he didn 't like to show others how he felt or what problems he was going through.
Kimel hopes against hope that in the future the people will fight against each other. Regardless of the symbols divergent to our opinion regarding the nation we should have hope and belief of a better world or future will dawn. With this positive note we are sure that all the mishaps and hazards faced by the victims so far will vanish and evaporate with expectation of independence in the near future: When it will be, I do not know, but Despite all the signs to the contrary.
The whole town's talking about Scrooge because Scrooge liked money more than people,in stave 2 the text says”Another idol has replaced her. ”He picked wealth over love. The whole town was talking about the dead man because he wasn’t the kindest person, but he was the richest and everyone wanted something or
In page 13 Dickens sets up a scene in which two gentlemen come visit Scrooge seeking charitable help for the poor but Scrooge refuses to help and says; “If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” meaning that if people would rather die than join the institutions he supports then they should. In this passage we learn that Scrooge is a very cold man, and a man unwilling to help. The effect of revealing the character traits indirectly is that it brings up examples of ones personality at play, like Scrooge actively showing how self contained he is and how he has a cold hearted personality by not helping
