Second Hand Inhalation
Another influence on people’s interpretation of marijuana is how and when a person can use marijuana. Currently, marijuana can not be used in public, though you can go to many restaurants and bars to consume another drug quite freely. Along the same lines of second hand smoke, cigarettes, while restricted, are still used in some public areas. A person inhaling second hand smoke is inhaling the same 7,000 chemicals the user is. Hundreds of those chemicals are toxic, while about 70 of those cause cancer (Tobacco-Related Mortality, 2015). These are all some of the things that we see in movies and television shows about regular marijuana users. When, in reality, that isn’t really how using marijuana looks. The media is constantly pressured into portraying their material in a certain way. “The portrayal of marijuana legalization as individualistic in nature and tending to ignore broader social attributes may shape public perceptions and direct political support away from the movement” (University of California). They do this to secure their viewers and fans, along with their financial supporters. They can alter the way their material appears, or neglect to show more than one position to the case. They are also able to find material to support their already established views. Things such as sugar and caffeine, though, aren’t usually brought up. A drug can be “something and often an illegal substance that causes addiction, habituation, or a marked change in consciousness” (Drug, 2015). By this definition, alcohol is considered a drug. Also included is caffeine and sugar. If we were to compare the symptoms of the drugs marijuana and alcohol, we would see a few similarities. These similarities include “feeling relaxed, clumsiness, memory loss, trouble concentrating” (Cannabis Facts, 20103). Long term similarities are “memory loss, trouble have children, and dependence (addiction)” (Cannabis Facts, 2013). Most of the withdrawal symptoms are similar as well. Many people drink coffee in the morning because they “need” it to function, and it becomes such a part of their routine that they will have withdrawal symptoms, showing their dependency to the drug.
