Kate Foley Ms. Zisel Global 9H April 2nd, 2017 The Middle Ages was a time of destruction and redemption for the people of the Roman Empire between A.D. 500-1400. The best description of this time period can be represented by four terms, the Golden Age, the Dark Age, the Age of Faith and the Age of Feudalism. Each time caused for a significant change in society that had a tremendous impact. From the troubling times of invasions and destructions to a time of prosperity and progression, the best terms that describe the Middle Ages are the Dark Ages and the Golden Ages.

The Medieval Ages were a time where many things like romance, art, music, poetry, disease and death all thrived. Everyone in this time period had a different point of view on it. Some thought it was a golden age, some thought it was an age of feudalism, and some also thought it was a dark age. Yes, this time may have had its ups, but it also had many, many downs. Its darkest times consisted of Barbarian invasions, death, and wars.
After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 CE, it led into the Middle Ages. Commonly referred as the Dark Age, Europe was in a time of reformation. Many have used the “Dark Age” as a synonym for the Middle Ages, due to the lack of education and unethical actions that occurred during 500 CE to 1500 CE. The Middle Ages weren’t so dark as it seemed, it was a duration of reconstruction, acquired learning, agricultural boom, technology improvements and architecture.
Europe in the Middle Ages was built around Christianity. The Catholic Church had a lot of power and control, being the largest landowner in Europe and owning vast amounts of wealth. However, the Church was negatively affected by the Black Plague. The quality of the clergy declined as a vast number had perished in the pandemic.
The Church also held a lot of power, due to the land it owned--be it monasteries, schools, or something else--it also held the power as it controlled time and ethics. The Church made the week, created the calendar and the days it held holy days, it could even ring bells to signal the hour. The Church was one of the governing forces in medieval times. The Middle ages was the period of time after the Roman Empire fell, and when the Europeans rebuilt themselves. The Middle ages, or Medieval Period, spanned from about years 500 to 1500. During this time, a new society began to appear. This new society had roots in the classical heritage of Rome, the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, and the customs of Germanic tribes. Many things were involved in the rebuilding of this society, such as religion, culture and most importantly, geographical location, government, and economics.
The middle ages, from 600-1450 CE was a period of time that was referred to as the dark ages. Though this era was difficult for Europe, other places such as Asia and the islamic world were going through almost the complete opposite experience. The European dark ages greatly differ from the Asian and Islamic golden ages because of the advancements they were making in the areas of mathematics, arts, government, and more. Each paragraph of this research paper will talk about the different advancements that each place made during their golden ages, and for Europe, the dark age. Asia's golden age took place from 800-1100 CE, the Tang dynasty.
The church was a central factor of the medieval times. “Medieval Christians believed they could only find salvation by following the guidance, laws, and teachings of the church, for according to Catholic beliefs, the church and its clergy had been proclaimed by Christ to be the only intermediary (go-between) between God and human beings”(“The Medieval, Catholic Roots of the Elizabethan World”). In the medieval times, the church overruled the peoples’ lives. Everyone believed that God, Heaven, and Hell existed. Everyone believed that the only way to Heaven was through the church.
the early Middle Ages firmly commenced after the fall of the seemingly holy (western) Roman Empire. It was a moment in time that represented the midpoint between the falls of both the western and eastern Roman empires, the fall of the eastern succeeding that of the west. It is known that the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery seamlessly merged afterwards, yet the question is what occurred in the Late Middle Ages to get to that point? A series of disadvantageous events, three major ones exactly, created complications among society, furthermore among Europe. The Great Famine, Black Death, and the Little Ice Age all contributed to the already downward spiraling economic and emotional state of the general public.
“The Southern Landscape served as Umbilical cord to the African Americans albeit the hardships in their real or fictionalized life” The journey of the African Americans from their homeland to New World is riddled with hardship, pain and inhumane treatment meted out by their masters. Being treated as slaves; chained and violently treated they landed in the Southern part of US with hopes of building a new life, new future. They continued to struggle in their new land only to be transported from one hell to the other. Yet for the African Americans the South held their hopes and dreams. For them the South itself served as their very own identity, source of wisdom and spirituality.

In the Middle Ages, they had a strange way of calling their time period a perfect world. They lived in a time where Christianity was spreading the globe, art and music started to expand and Europe was becoming the strongest nation. Everything seemed to be right except for how people were living life. It was unfair the way everyone was separated into a class and all you did wrong was just be born into the wrong family. In the Middle Ages, there was an indefinite structure in society.
During the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church had a great amount of power because it was the only one at the time. As expressed in The Canterbury Tales, it even oversaw the court, so one could propose that the Church had exponential power. They seemed to rule the economy and hold a lot of land. Kings and queens were even preceded by the Church. Supposedly, in those times, the Catholic Church was a source of great hypocrisy or a good number of its people were.
This time period lasted from the 5th century to the 15th century, it began with the fall of the roman empire and merged into the renaissance and the age of discovery. It covered the time from the fall of the empire to the rise of the ottoman empire, which is the time of castles, and peasants. The middle ages were also called the dark ages because this period of time had been lost to history. Many important records of this period have not survived, historians don’t know much about this time as it is. During this “dark age” there was no “pizazz”.
