Healing from anxiety and depression is difficult and it’s a long process but Debbie Tung was able to heal and she talks about her process in the graphic novel Everything Is Okay. She uses her story of her own self-care and self-acceptance in order to teach others some steps to healing. The way she uses her illustrations to demonstrate her feelings through colors and places. These illustrations help to convey to the reader the intensity of her emotions. Also she utilizes her writing to inspire others to take the steps needed for recovery. Self love helps you to accept yourself and take care of yourself even when in the past you felt you didn’t deserve it. She explains how loving herself for how she is instead of comparing herself to everyone else helped her to take better care of herself. For example in the graphic novel on panel 117 its a sky of color that says “Recognize your uniqueness. Be proud of who you are, what you have, what your life is about, and what you want to pursue. Pay attention to your own path. You don’t need validation from others.” The way she uses colors and the words in the sky with her looking at them makes these words have more importance like it’s what she looks up to. This was an important step in learning how to accept herself and how to take better care of herself. Asking for help allowed her to realize she wasn’t okay and initiated her to make changes in order to take better care of herself and accept herself for who she is. For instance on page 150 she shows ways she has asked for help and how you don’t have to do it alone. She says “Whatever depression looks like to you, know that your experiences are valid. Reach out for help when you need it and never be ashamed of your story. Asking for help is one of the bravest things you can do. Life is messy and there's so much we have to go through. We can’t do it all on our own.” These words show how she and other people can ask for help; they don’t have to do it alone. The images show how she asked for therapy and depend on her significant other and then them looking at the stars. The way she uses dark colors when talking about her depression and then colorful stars after she asked for help. This makes the feelings more positive when things are getting better for her. This all shows how asking for help was important for taking the steps to self-acceptance and taking care of
